Connections can be made by drawing upon past experiences, knowledge, and empathy to relate to objects, people, and ideas. These are five problem based lesson plans to inspire connections and art based on those connections. Key concepts about Big Idea: Relationships are formed by connections Connections are important to human existence Making connections fuels art making/viewing Fine Arts Goals Met by the Objectives: -26.B.2d Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create works of visual art using problem solving, observing, designing, sketching and constructing. -25.B.2 Understand how elements and principles combine within an art form to express ideas. -26.B.1d Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create visual works of art using manipulation, eye/hand coordination, building and imagination. 3-4 Essential Questions: What happens when you make irrational connections? Do these connections affect how we see the world and each other? Are connections important in art making? How do connections make meaning? Vocabulary Acquisition: collage: combination of various things Surrealism: art movement to combine real life with dream life by making irrational juxtaposition of images Irrational juxtaposition of images: making connections by combining or placing close to each other images that would never in ordinary life be together Scale-size Key Artistic Concepts: Collage Surrealism 1 Problem-Based Lesson Plan ARTE 301 Artmaking Materials Needed: Scissors Glue Magazines Construction paper pencils Contemporary/Historical/Multicultural exemplars: Eugenia Loli Rene magritte Procedures: DISCUSSION: (5 minutes) o Have any of you ever had crazy dreams!? o We will be making a surreal, or dream like collage 2 Problem-Based Lesson Plan ARTE 301 o Imagination is key!! DEMONSTRATIONS: (8 minutes) o Show examples o Define surrealism o The idea is to make a situation, environment, or combination of objects that don’t make sense, like your dreams o How can you make something dream like? Ex. unrealistic scale, connect very different objects o Fill whole page! So tear bigger pieces for background or enough small pieces to fill whole paper DESIGN/WORK SESSION: (20 minutes) o First 8-10 minutes look through magazines, tear out, cut out images o Second 12-10 minutes arrange, glue down images CLEAN UP: clean up scraps, glue, scissors, name on paper(5 minutes) CLOSURE: (2 minute) o While walking around looking at each other’s work discuss o What does making these connections that don’t normally exist between objects/people do? What does it make you think about? 3
