The Constitution Amendments 11 – 27 Amendment 11 - When a state is sued by a citizen of another state or a citizen of a foreign country the suit must be tried in STATE court, not a federal court. Amendment 12 – Electors to cast separate ballots for president and vice president. This was to prevent having a president and vice president from opposing parties. Amendment 13 – This amendment ended slavery in the United States and its territories. Amendment 14 – Citizenship is given to African-Americans. This amendment has been extended to include corporations as citizens that can be sued. Amendment 15 – The right to vote can NOT be denied based on race or color. Amendment 16 - Congress has the power to tax income. There was a challenge to this amendment based on when enough states ratified the amendment but the Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of this amendment. Amendment 17 - Citizens could vote directly for their Senators rather then being chosen by state legislators. Amendment 18 – The prohibition of alcohol – no manufacturing, selling or transporting of alcoholic beverages. Amendment 19 – Women receive the right to vote. Amendment 20 – ‘Lame Duck Amendment’ – Pres. Takes office Jan 20. Congress must meet once a year. If the Pres elect dies before taking office the VP becomes Pres. Amendment 21 - Prohibition is repealed Amendment 22 – No person may be elected to the presidency more than twice. The most years a person may be president is 10 years (2 years if they are VP and Pres dies and 2 terms of their own) Amendment 23 - Washington DC is given 3 electoral votes Amendment 24 - No poll taxes (cannot tax people to vote) Amendment 25 – Presidential disability and succession – If the Pres dies, resigns or is removed from office the VP becomes Pres. If the Vice Presidency is vacant the Pres names a VP and Congress approves. The Pres. Notifies Congress if they are unable to fulfill their duties and VP serves as acting Pres. When the VP and a majority of the cabinet inform Congress the Pres is unable to fulfill his duties the VP becomes Pres. Amendment 26 - 18 year olds can vote. Amendment 27 - An increase on Congressional salaries will take effect during the following session of Congress.
