Through different activities, you can learn about your place within these communities and be motivated to act in a new context. Your reflection on Community and service Create an overview of your commitment to community service so far this year. Include a description of the activities in which you are involved. Explain how these experiences have affected you and impacted others. This year I decided to do more hours than I was asked to do because I felt that I should be involved with the community more. The first things that I did to help the community was going to my old elementary school with my teacher and advertise how LCCHS is a good school and I helped answer any questions that they might have. The second time I went to go visit my old elementary school again but this to help out at the after school program. During the time that I was there I helped some students with their homework and I even helped pass out the snacks. The Third activity that I did with my community is raise money to buy food for the SPCA. In my English class we were asked to raise as much money as we can from our family members and friends so that we can the later go out and buy the materials we were assigned. My group was in charge of buying dog treats and we bought many dog treats for various sized pets. The fourth activity that I did was the canned food drive at my school. My friends and I received many cans from the houses we went too. The fifth and final activity that I did for my community this year was go with my math teacher and three other students to drop off the items that we collected from the SPCA wish list. The people from the SPCA thanked us for giving the materials and they then let us visit the animals. This experience affected me because it enabled me to see how nice some people can be to other people. For instance when I was doing the canned food drive the people giving us the canned food were actually giving a very generous amount of cans and when I was collecting money from my family and friends they gave me a lot of money to help the poor sick animals at the SPCA. What I did for the community impacted others because I was able to give some poor families a Christmas meal and I was also able to help some animals eat and have shelter. Health and Social Education This area of interaction delves into the range of human issues that exists in human societies, such as social structures, relationships and health. During the five years of the programme, this AOI will help you to find out how these issues affect societies, communities and individuals, including yourself. Through the area of health and social education, you can identify and develop skills that will enable you to function as effective member of societies, as well as learning about how you are changing and how to make informed decisions that may relate to your welfare. Reflection on this AOI Which health and social issues affect my age group? How were they approached so far this year in the school? A social issue that affects my age group is Bullying because many people want to feel great about themselves by making others feel worse. Since bill 56 came out this year our school decided to focus more on bullying and they dedicated an anti-bullying week. During this week we had a speaker come to our school, we learned about bill 56, we practiced different scenarios in class, we did some activities during lunch, we got to wear our pink shirts all week and some students including me created a PSA. Many people participated in these activities and it was a week were we learned a lot more about bullying and how it affects others. Which other issue(s) should be addressed in this school for your group age? Why do you think so? The health issue that I think should be addressed is obesity because I noticed that a lot of students go out to eat every dad and it’s mostly the same students. The restaurants that they have near our school are all fast food restaurants meaning that everything is basically fried or oily. With a lot of people consuming these foods their weight is starting to increase and these foods can make most people sick. Since I have celiac disease I can’t eat at these restaurants because I can’t eat anything that has wheat or flour so instead I bring my own sandwich everyday making me eat a healthy lunch. Environments This area of interaction considers how human interact with the world at large and the parts we play in our environments. It extends into areas beyond human issues and asks students to examine the interrelationships of different environments. Both immediate classroom environments and global environments are to be considered. Reflection on this AOI How did I affect my environments this year? How did my environments affect me? I am a person who does not litter because I respect my global environment but many people do the opposite that’s why sometimes when I wait for the bus in the morning I can find pieces of garbage lying next to my bus stop. I also respect my classroom environment because I don’t destroy the materials given and when I use or take home any materials from class I make sure to return the materials in the same condition I received them . I find that the people who share the same classroom as me keep it clean and do not destroy the materials. The environments that I’m surrounded by affect how I learn and how I interoperate stuff because the calmer the classroom is the more I feel prepared to listen and learn new things but if my environment is loud and wild I will most likely get a headache and not feel like working cause I can not concentrate. Human ingenuity This AOI deals with the way in which human minds have influenced the world, for example, the way we are, think, interact with each other, create, find solutions to and cause problems, transform ideas and rationalize thought. It also considers the consequences of human thought and action. Reflection on this AOI What have I created this year in school that I am the most proud of? Why is it so? The thing that I created in school that I’m proud of this year is my homemade battery which was part of my science fair project. The reason why I’m proud of this project is because my partner and I created this idea from a simpler idea which was to test which battery lasts longer. What we did instead was test which battery can take the most pictures and then we added another part to it which was creating our own homemade battery and estimating how many pictures it can take. Even though we didn’t get a high number of picture I still feel proud that we were able to create a battery that could have the potential to take some pictures because it contained a small amount of electricity. PART B: Your pieces of work In all the pieces of work that you have included in your portfolio, chose one of them in order to answer the following questions. Piece of work chosen: red cabbage pH indicator assignment How this chosen piece of work relate to the Areas of Interaction? This piece of work relates the areas of interaction because it demonstrates a high amount of human ingenuity. I find that it demonstrates human ingenuity because with this assignment you wear able to create your own pH paper with a cabbage which probably costs less than buying the pH paper. I also find it relates to environments because your using materials that can be found in your kitchen making that material have another use other than being used to cook with. What do you think you have learned while working on this assignment? I feel that I have learnt that if you put your mind to it you can find many other ways create a simple object. Like for example last year we had an assignment were we had to recreate a bird beak and we had to build it with materials that we had at home and me and my partner were capable of doing it no problem. Why are you proud of this piece of work? I am proud of this piece of work because I find that I found what the secret message of this project was and I am also proud because I was successfully pass this assignment and get a good mark. PART C: Learner profile The aim of the MYP programme is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. The IB learner profile is a list of attributes that you should develop and work on during the five years of the programme. IB learners strive to be: Inquirers They develop their natural curiosity. Balanced They understand the importance of intellectual, physical and emotional balance to achieve personal well-being for themselves and others. Reflective They give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and experience. They are able to assess and understand their strengths and limitations in order to support their learning and personal development. Reflection on the IB learner profile Chose the two attributes that you feel that you developed the best so far this year. Explain why you picked these two attributes and how you demonstrated them so far this year. This year I feel that I have developed the attributes of being knowledgeable and open-minded. The reason why I picked knowledgeable is because I feel that this year I worked on learning a variety of different things that affect my daily life but I didn’t think were important. For example I learned about many things in math that I didn’t think I would need to use later on in my life but then the more I thought about it I realized it was actually very important. This year I demonstrated this attribute when I was doing my science fair project because I learned that batteries are very expensive and many people use them for everyday objects and then the more that I thought about this the more I realized that there may be a way to make homemade batteries. The reason why I picked the attribute open-minded is because I feel that this year I learned to except that other people have different ideas then mine and that trying theirs might not be that bad of an idea. I demonstrated this attribute when I had to do my English classroom redecoration project because we were having trouble making chairs so I had an idea on how to make the chairs but it was a bit complicated while one of my partners had another idea to make the chairs so we decided to use hers and I learnt that her idea was faster to do and was easier to put together. Chose two attributes that you feel that you need to develop. Explain why you picked these two attributes and how you will work on them. The two attributes that I feel I need to work on are risk-takers and reflective. The reason why I picked risk- takers is because I feel that I don’t always take that extra step when doing my work because I’m scared that what I’m doing is wrong so I try to keep it as close to what the teachers asked for. I will work on being a risk-taker by adding in that extra thing that I wanted to because sometimes the teachers give extra points for having that extra touch. The reason why I chose the attribute reflective is because I find that I don’t like to take too long on double checking my work when I should. I will work on this attribute by taking more time to double check my work even if I don’t feel like it because chances are that there are probably more mistakes.
