Geometry Syllabus
2011-2012
Mrs. Washington: mwashigtonl@cnusd.k12.ca.us
Course Overview
The course will emphasize the basic concepts of geometry. We live in a three-dimensional world. In order to interpret and
make sense of that world, students need both analytical and spatial abilities. Geometry involves notions of shape, size,
position, and dimension are used extensively to describe and understand the world around us. Topics include the language of
geometry (vocab.), reasoning and proofs, parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent triangles and their applications,
quadrilaterals, similarity, geometric shapes, area and volume, coordinate geometry, and transformations. Topics from
Algebra 1 will be reviewed and utilized throughout the course.

Course Requirements
Learning mathematics is a step-by-step process. Always keep up with and complete your assignments because you must
understand each topic in order to learn the next one.
When you are working problems for assignments, show the problem and show every step in your solution. Then, if you make
an error, it will be easier to find it. Correct notation and an organized format will be emphasized in class. Use it as a model
for your work. One of the class goals is to help you communicate mathematics effectively and to help you become
mathematically powerful.

Tests allow you to monitor how well you know the content without aid.
Notes cannot be used to take tests.
You can retake a test once within two weeks of the test date if you earned 70% or less.
Tests will occur once a unit is completed, approximately once a month.
Personalized Learning Plan (PLP):
PLPs allow you to quantify your learning. Each CA State Standard is broken down into the individual skills you must be
proficient in to succeed. You will update your PLP once every two weeks.
Classroom Etiquette/Procedures
Absences / Late Work:
It is the student’s responsibility to find out what s/he missed when s/he was absent. I will update the class website
daily with all assignments and homework. It is in the students’ best interest to check the website and keep on schedule
with all assignments. When the student returns to class, s/he can update his/her notes and collect any necessary
worksheets.
CAUTION: You will not earn any credit on work assigned, done, due, or collected on identified truant / unjustified
absent days.
Students with excessive unexcused absences or tardiness may not make up missed assignments and
therefore have their grade lowered.
Electronics: Electronics including ipods (unless stipulated otherwise) and cell phones should be turned off and put away.
Use of an electronic device including text messaging, taking a call during class time, a ringing/vibrating cell phone, or
even taking your ipod/cell phone out of your bag will result in 1% being deducted from your final grade for each
incident. In the event of an emergency, parents should contact the main office.
I reserve the right as teacher to alter this grading policy if I find it necessary. But, I will inform you of any changes.
REMEMBER: YOUR SUCCESS IN THIS CLASS IS VERY IMPORTANT. BE READY TO WORK HARD AND TO PUT
100% TIME AND EFFORT INTO YOUR WORK. DO NOT FALL BEHIND. SEE ME FOR EXTRA HELP AS OFTEN AS
NEEDED.
