Data & Observations for Experiment 7
Unknown # ________
Unknown physical appearance & odor:
Then, set up a data table (landscape style) as stated below:
In your lab notebook set up a table with 9 columns and 9 rows to provide boxes into which you will place your
observations. Running across the top, label the columns (beginning with the second column) with the following
functional groups: (1) unsaturated hydrocarbon, (2) primary alcohol, (3) secondary alcohol, (4) tertiary alcohol,
(5) phenol , (6) aldehyde, and (7) ketone. The last column should be labeled (8) Unknown.
Put the following reagents down the left side of the table starting with the second box: (1) Ceric Ammonium
Nitrate, (2) Chromic Acid, (3) HCl and ZnCl2 , (4) Tollen’s Reagent, (5) 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine, (6) Br2 in
water, (7) Br2, and (8) ferric chloride.
Here is an example of what it should kind of look like. You need to handwrite this into your notebook such
that the table starts on the left page and extends to the right page. So, you may write in pen on the left side
of your NB for this.
