Objectives: (What are we learning in this unit?)
Describe similarities and differences in the structure and function of the three types of muscle tissue and indicate where they are found in the body.
Define and explain the role of endomysium, perimysium, epimysium, and tendon.
Describe the microscopic structure of skeletal muscle and explain the role of actin- and myosin- containing myofilaments.
Describe the events of muscle cell contraction.
Define graded response, tetanus, isotonic and isometric contractions, and muscle tone as these terms apply to skeletal muscle.
Describe three ways ATP is regenerated during muscle activity.
Define oxygen debt and muscle fatigue and list possible causes of muscle fatigue.
Describe the effects of aerobic and resistance exercise on skeletal muscles and other body organs.
Define origin, insertion, prime mover, antagonist, synergist, and fixator as they relate to muscles.
Demonstrate or identify the different types of body movements.
List some criteria used for naming muscles.
Name and locate the major muscles of the human body and state the action of each.

Models Oral Defense.
• Build a 3-D sliding filament model. Use pipe cleaners, Styrofoam, clay, or any other materials to build a model of a sarcomere. Your model must be 3-dimensional and moveable. Rubric in lab drawer. (8 points) ______
• Movements of Arm Muscles. Build a model arm with origins and insertions of major muscles. You will model several different muscle actions. Look for an accompanying worksheet in the lab drawer. (8 points) ______
Become a Certified Craftsperson: Complete an “Introduction to Using the Woodshop” with Mr. Tassone. Obtain his signature stating that you are capable of working safely in the woodshop. (5 points) ______
Internet Activities. Online Submission
• Interactive tutorial on sliding filament: Go to the class wiki and find the link that takes you to the tutorial.
As you watch, answer the accompanying questions. (6 pts)
• Human cadaver dissection video: Find the video link on the wiki. As you watch the video, answer the accompanying questions on the worksheet “Cadaver Dissection Video Questions”. (Note: if you have a weak stomach, you may want to avoid this one) (6 pts)
______

Other Activities. Oral Defense.
• Muscle flashcards. Cut out flashcards and study them with a partner. (5 pts) ______
• Muscular and Neuromuscular Disorders. Diagnose 6 patients complaining of neuromuscular symptoms. (5 pts) ______
• Crossword puzzle: The Muscles. (3 points) ______
Design Challenge: Build a prosthetic arm PART 1. You will have access to the wood shop for this assignment. Groups may be 1 – 3 people. Look for direction sheet in the B-layer drawer. *Before you choose this project, you must complete an orientation in the woodshop.
OR
Muscle Man Drawing: In a small group (1 – 3 people), obtain two 7-foot pieces of paper. Create a neat, clearly labeled drawing of human muscles, front and back. Look for direction sheet in the B-layer drawer.
Design Challenge: Prosthetic arm project PART 2: Research and evaluate prosthetic devices. More details can be found on the directions sheet you used during the B-layer. If you choose this option, be prepared to present your B-layer model along with your research.
OR
Create a medical brochure about a disease of the muscular system. Tetanus, muscular dystrophy, steroid use, myostainrelated hypertrophy, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, rigor mortis (not a treatable condition!), hernia, trichinosis, or any other topic that has been approved by your teacher. If you choose this option, bring in at least 3 copies of your brochure on the day of your presentation. Sign up for your topic with your teacher. (No repeats.)

Note: Keep in mind that this is a research project. Find credible sources for each idea in your report. Cite all sources in
MLA format.
Design a fitness plan: Invent a patient and describe his/her fitness and health goals. Next, write a fitness plan for him/her to follow that addresses the following: o Fast/slow twitch muscles o Muscle tone o Aerobic and anaerobic exercise o Working antagonistic pairs o Foods important for muscle function
Your plan should be detailed enough that someone else could follow it exactly with no confusion. In addition to explaining what to do, explain to your patient why he/she should do these things; What is the science behind the recommendations you make in your plan?
OR
Plagiarism Report Part 2: The Action Plan. Design a proposal to combat cheating at AHS. Include preventative measures and possible responses. Refer to the original assignment for specific guidelines.
***If you are not happy with your score on a class work assignment, you may take more time to study or improve a project. I will meet with you again once you feel that you know the material. All work, including re-takes, is still due when the unit plan is due***
