This person will have experience of working in the UK education sector and be able to offer specialist academic and/or professional expertise in a relevant area or areas of the curriculum. Experience in teaching, mentoring and support skills in higher education would be an advantage. The person appointed will hold an honours degree (or equivalent) and have relevant postgraduate qualifications and training. Possession or interest in undertaking a PhD would be an advantage. CLOSING DATE: Friday, 28th November 2013 INTERVIEW DATE: Thursday 5th December 203 JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Senior Lecturer in Education – LSE017 Fixed term contract for 3 years GRADE & SALARY: Grade G, £38,522 - £44,607 per annum DEPARTMENT: School of Psychology, Early Years and Therapeutic Studies Responsible to: ASL, Associate Head of School Main Purpose of Job: To contribute to the delivery of an effective teaching and scholarly experience for the University’s students, and to help further its ambitions in research and knowledge transfer. Principal Responsibilities and Duties: 1. To undertake/contribute to the development of the curriculum within the subject area and to contribute to the maintenance and development of existing modules and awards and develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches. 2. To work to enhance existing schemes/courses, and to develop new areas, including new modules or courses as appropriate. In particular to teach (and undertake associated responsibilities for) on the education programmes - with particular emphasis on modules focusing on early years practice - and to engage in related in-service provision as required. 3. To be a course or award leader, as determined in conjunction with the Associate Head. This will normally be for courses or awards of reasonable complexity. As an alternative leadership of a complex module may be appropriate. 4. To fully engage and comply with the concept of the ‘USW Academic’. This may include: i. Maintaining a personal research portfolio which enhances teaching and the research profile of the subject area. This might also include leading collaborative projects, identifying sources of funding and securing grant allocations ii. Reflecting on academic practice which develops teaching materials and/or methods of approach and delivery. This will include engagement with the University’s Reflecting On Academic Practice (RAP) Scheme. iii. Undertake research in a relevant area of education and to contribute to the education subject research profile. 5. To utilise effective assessment instruments and ensure adequate, detailed feedback to students is provided 6. To engage with quality assessments, e.g. Subject review, module evaluation, leading such processes in areas where there is personal leadership responsibility 7. To supervise the work of students in areas such as projects, fieldwork and placements 8. To communicate effectively with colleagues and students through internal networks, and the sharing of ideas and information 9. To act as a mentor to less experienced staff 10. To attend field/subject/award boards as required 11. To participate in Faculty Open Days and other recruitment activities as appropriate 12. To undertake appropriate levels of pastoral care for students ensuring interpersonal skills are adequately developed 13. Any other duties as maybe assigned from time to time commensurate with the grade and as required by the Head of Division or Department or Dean of Faculty PERSON SPECIFICATION SKILLS AND ABILITIES Essential a) Good communication skills b) A high level of competence in the skills necessary for planning and delivery of taught courses in education at HE level. c) Ability to undertake appropriate research and scholarly activity. KNOWLEDGE Essential d) Secure general knowledge of issues and practice relevant to education in the British school system. EXPERIENCE Essential e) Successful experience of teaching in the UK primary education system. TRAINING Essential f) An honours degree. g) A PGCE (schools sector) or equivalent qualification (e.g. B.Ed) OTHER REQUIREMENTS Essential h) Ability and readiness to play a full and active part in the professional work of a busy staff team by manifesting the qualities of reliability, initiative and enthusiasm and the production of high quality work to deadlines. i) Ability to develop positive working relationships with students, colleagues and other professional contacts. Desirable j) Good IT skills including the ability to use a range of systems and packages to enhance students' learning. k) Ability to supervise research students. l) Welsh Speaker Desirable m) Specialist knowledge of specific subjects areas within the primary and early years curriculum. The ability to support delivery of modules focusing on language and literacy would be an advantage as would specialist knowledge of SEN. n) Expertise in early year’s pedagogy. Desirable o) Experience of primary teaching or related disciplines at H.E. level or in an advisory teacher role. p) Successful experience of working on educational research or development projects or postgraduate study Desirable q) A postgraduate/masters qualification in education or a relevant discipline. r) Research training relevant to doctoral study in education. Desirable s) Evidence of recent published research or future publishing potential.
