Preparations before the Program
Budget
Expenses in Bangkok:
• Visa Fees (Approximately Baht 10,000 in total – Visa fee of $140 and SEVIS fee of $180)
• Airfares (Approximately Baht 45,000 for Economy Class; Korean Air – Transit in Seoul,
China Air – Transit in Taipei)
Expenses in US:
• Estimated total living cost: minimum of $8,000; it could be lower if you cook or don’t
party as much
General Expenses:
• Accommodation – $1,875 - $2,250
• Meals - Varies: Low $7/meal, Average $10-$12/meal, High $20+/meal
• Tip - Usually 15% of the bill for services; Big group (i.e. 6+) could be charged higher
• Groceries – Water, snacks, toiletries, laundry items
• Phone - T-Mobile: Prepaid Family Plan – $35-70/month, depending on the
amount of talk, text and web that you want
- AT&T: Prepaid $1/day if use within AT&T
- Use Skype (Unlimited Country Plan $5.95/month or 6 cents per min avg.)
Other Expenses: (may require higher budget for the following activities)

Cautions
Luggage Content:
• Bring both winter and summer clothes (unfortunately, Spring is the transition from Winter to
Summer … you’ll experience both extremes – extremely cold & extremely hot weather)
• Don’t bring too much clothes and other items that you plan to buy in US (Most of you will
definitely get to do some shopping!). Should spare some space for the returning trip to
Thailand.
Luggage Weight:
• Keep in mind of fees for the extra weights / extra luggage
• Most airlines charged extra for luggages over 23kg (2 bags maximum checked-in)
• Korean Air: Extra fees of $25 for weights over 23kg but lower than 32kg (Economy Class),
$140 for an additional luggage
Safety:
• It is better to walk in group when it is late at night
• Use the common routes
• Use SafeRide (847-491-7000) – Free escorted rides to and from campus and nearby housing
(available from 9pm until 2:30am)
• Emergency poles around the campus are for use in emergency, press and call for help and
keep pressing the next one in the direction you are running, police will know where you are.
Once You Arrive Kellogg on the 1st Day

Transportation from O’Hare Int’l Airport to Evanston (McManus Living Center)
• Taxi costs about $44 per ride (Fixed rate – 303 Taxi Tel: 1-847-303-0303)
• Shuttles (i.e.Go Airport Express): private van costs about $21/person (6 persons per van) or
shared van costs $18/person (*Note: The costs already include tips)
What to do on the first day
• Check in at your dorm (most likely it’ll be at McManus) and get the keys to your apartment
• Meet Cathy/Deborah (Student Affairs Office at Jacobs Center)
• Meet Adam to submit the student visa documents (Student Affairs Office at Jacobs Center)
• Get student ID card (WildCard) and buy textbooks at Norris Center
• Submit health insurance documents and schedule TB test (don’t do TB test in Thailand
because they don’t accept it). If your result is positive, it will cost you $400 for X-RAY (at
Northshore University Health System)
• Make payments for housing and activities fee at Bursar Office (Cross Clark St. from
McManus)
• Open bank account (either Chase or Bank of America; both have ATMs near McManus)
• Get SIM cards for your cell phones (recommend T-mobile’s Family Plan)
• Buy groceries … and bed sheets + pillow case + pillow + blanket (Buy from Macy’s at Old
Orchard)
