Andy Warhol Animal Printmaking 4th Grade Objectives: Students will learn about the artist Andy Warhol. Students will learn about the art style of Pop (Popular) Art. Students will learn about and use the process of Printmaking. Students will practice drawing to draw their endangered species. Students will create their art by creating a printing block and printing their animal. Students will decorate their art in the style of Andy Warhol. Materials: Tracing paper Animal photos Pencils and erasers Printing foam Pens Brayers Black paint Oil pastels Day 1: Discuss the artist Andy Warhol. Show the Warhol PPT or show images of his art on the board. Discuss the art style of Pop Art and the technique of Printmaking. Discuss his themes and series and show images of his endangered species series. Demonstrate how to create the project. 1) Choose a photo of an endangered species and tape a piece of tracing paper on top. 2) Trace the animal shape and a few details. Day 2: Review Andy Warhol. Either read the book or show the video Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists: Andy Warhol. Demonstrate: 1) Tape the pencil drawing on to the correct size printing foam. Trace over the lines. 2) Remove the paper and re-trace the lines with a pen. Make different thicknesses of lines to add interest. Add a border too. Some areas (like the nose) can be all colored in. Day 3: Discuss printmaking and how you can print the same image over and over. Demonstrate how to print the foam plates. 1) Show how to use the brayer & ink the plate 2) Show how to line up the plate and press down 3) Lift of the plate and let dry. 1 practice and 1 final, If not successful repeat. Day 4: Demonstrate how to decorate the print in the style of the Endangered Animal Series using oil pastels. Have visuals on the board.
