Thursday November 15th 2012 • QU: Organelle Function Plant/Animal Nucleus Rough ER Lysosome Smooth ER **Test Tuesday November 20th** • OBJ: Organelles, Animal Cell Lab Differences Between Plant and Animal • Vacuole – Food….Animal – Water…Plant • Chloroplast • Cell Wall MITOCHONDRIA (MIGHTY) - Second largest organelle - Energy center for the cell!! Chloroplast -Found in plant cells - Turns light energy into chemical energy **PHOTOSYNTHESIS occurs here** Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum -Stores, creates, and packages FATS, enzymes and other materials Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum - Goes through cytoplasm onto cell membrane - Stores, separates, and serves as cell's transport system - Aids in the creation of PROTEINS *Both act as a transport system within the cell* Golgi Apparatus Golgi apparatus - “packaging plant out of the cell” like UPS - A membrane structure found near nucleus - Composed of numerous layers forming a sac Chromatin (DNA) Cell Membrane - Outer membrane of cell that controls cellular traffic - Contains proteins (left, gray) that span through the membrane and allow passage of materials - Proteins are surrounded by a phospholipid bilayer. Vacuole -Membrane-bound sacs for storage, digestion, and waste removal - ANIMAL: Contains food solution -Smaller in animals than in plants -PLANTS: for water storage Lysosome (Lysol) - Cleaning center - Transports undigested material to cell membrane for removal - Vary in shape depending on process being carried out Nucleus (in center) with Nucleolus Nucleus -Contains nucleolus -Contains chromatin/DNA -Director of functions of the cell Nucleolus - Contains info to make Proteins Nuclear Membrane and Nuclear Pores Nuclear Membrane: -Regulates traffic in and out of nucleus Nuclear Pores -Allows for molecules to enter and exit nucleus Binder Organization Sheet Chapter 6: Cells 1. Comparing Plant and Animal Cell Lab Friday November 16th 2012 • QU: Organelle Function Plant/Animal Water Vacuole Stores food Structure for Plant Cells Regulates entry and exit from cell **Test Tuesday November 20th** **Lab due at end of hour!** • OBJ: NO Quiz, Plant Cell Lab, Organelle Practice Ribosome - Each cell contains thousands - Miniature 'protein factories' Cell Wall: Only in Plants -Offers support and strength -Plasmodesmata are wholes that allow nutrients in and out Cytoplasm/Cytoskeleton (green in image) -microfilaments and microtubules set up a "skeleton" of the cell -Cytosol fills the spaces. -Cytoplasm has many different molecules -enzymes, fatty acids, sugars, and amino acids that are used to keep the cell working. Centrioles - Paired cylindrical organelles near nucleus - Involved in cellular division
