In ?: P.38
• What subatomic (smaller than an atom) particles are contained in the nucleus of an atom? Illustrate and describe each.
Atomic Structure Notes
• Half sheet
• Glue into notebook P.39 when completed
The Atom
1. Atoms are the “building blocks” that make up ALL matter.
– Dalton’s Atomic Theory
• 1 type of atom = element
• More than one type of atom = compound
2. An atom is the smallest part of an element that keeps the properties of the element
– One atom of Gold, still has all the same properties of Gold.
How small is an atom?
• A single penny has 2 x 10 22 atoms or
20,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000 atoms!
Inside the Atom
3. All atoms are made up of the same 3 subatomic (smaller than an atom) structures:
PROTONS (+), NEUTRONS ( no charge ), and
ELECTRONS (-).
4. The nucleus is the dense, positively charged center of an atom.
5. A proton is a positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom.
6. A neutron is a particle in the nucleus that has NO
CHARGE.
7. An electron is a small, negatively-charged particle always moving around the nucleus. Found in an area called the electron cloud.

Out ?: P.38
• Compare and contrast:
– Proton v Neutron
• Add notes to NB—P.39
NB CHECK!
• Only need your science NB and a writing utensil to complete!
1. Turn into basket on the back table to complete.
2. Pick up PURPLE lyrics to the “Atoms Family” song! Rehearse it silently.
1st Verse:
They’re tiny and they’re teeny,
Much smaller than a beany,
They never can be seeny,
The Atoms Family.
Chorus
2nd Verse:
Together they make gases,
And liquids like molasses,
And all the solid masses,
The Atoms Family
Chorus

3rd Verse:
Neutrons can be found,
Where protons hang around;
Electrons they surround
The Atoms Family.
Chorus
Chorus:
They are so small.
(Snap, snap)
They’re round like a ball.
(Snap, snap)
They make up the air.
They’re everywhere.
Can’t see them at all.
