Unit Title: Physical Fitness
Grade Level: 7th
Unit Essential Questions
1. How does physical fitness/physical activity benefit the body?
2. How does exercise affect a person’s lifestyle?
3. How would anaerobic and aerobic exercises determine a person’s personal
exercise choices?
Unit Essential Understandings
Students will understand:
1. Physical fitness benefits the body by handling the day-to-day physical demands.
Additionally, that physical activity is any bodily movement that uses up energy and
burns calories.
2. Exercise is a planned physical activity done regularly to maintain ones fitness.
Without exercise, a person would not be able to burn calories and maintain a
healthy weight.
3. Aerobic exercises are rhythmic, nonstop, and moderate to vigorous that requires
large amounts of Co2. If a person wanted to burn more calories, they would use
these types of exercises. Ex: stair climbing, running, biking
Whereas, Anaerobic is an intense exercise that requires little Co2 but uses short
bursts of energy. A person who is focusing on muscle toning and building would use
these exercises to reach a goal. Ex: lifting weights, football

Summative Assessment Description
Students will watch a Prezi presentation to determine what physical fitness,
physical activity and exercise influence their lifestyle. They will choose a You Tube
video embedded in the Prezi, listen to the workout and get an understanding of the
job of a personal trainer. Students would then summarize the video and include
what types of exercises, (aerobic or anaerobic) the trainer used, providing specific
names. Additionally, they would determine what goal the athlete was trying to
obtain.
Lastly, students will comment on two of their classmates You Tube Videos and
explain how theirs differed.
Lesson One
Content Objectives: Students will understand
1. the relationship between physical fitness, physical activity and exercise.
2. the differences between physical exercise and physical activity.
3. the components to anaerobic and aerobic exercises.
Skill Objectives: Students will be able to
1. explain the relationships between physical fitness, physical activity and
exercise.
2. answer questions about their observations of the Prezi presentation.
3. use Wikispace to answer the questions and then comment on two of their
classmates.
4. use You Tube videos to see, name and explain exercises in a fitness workout.

Pedagogy/Strategies
1. Have students view and reflect upon a physical fitness video regarding
exercise.
2. Formatively assess student’s initial understanding through online discussions.
3. Through illustration have students explore the relationship between physical
fitness and physical activity.
Technology Leveraged & Rationale
1. You Tube video’s serve as an illustration of exercises, the techniques used and
why they are done.
2. The wikispace allows students to express how their opinion differs about the
videos and what they see is important.
3. Questions help prompt students in learning and knowing what is important.
