Summer Technology Institute Mini-Unit Unit Title: Physical Fitness Grade Level: 7th Unit Essential Questions 1. How does physical fitness/physical activity benefit the body? 2. How does exercise affect a person’s lifestyle? 3. How would anaerobic and aerobic exercises determine a person’s personal exercise choices? Unit Essential Understandings Students will understand: 1. Physical fitness benefits the body by handling the day-to-day physical demands. Additionally, that physical activity is any bodily movement that uses up energy and burns calories. 2. Exercise is a planned physical activity done regularly to maintain ones fitness. Without exercise, a person would not be able to burn calories and maintain a healthy weight. 3. Aerobic exercises are rhythmic, nonstop, and moderate to vigorous that requires large amounts of Co2. If a person wanted to burn more calories, they would use these types of exercises. Ex: stair climbing, running, biking Whereas, Anaerobic is an intense exercise that requires little Co2 but uses short bursts of energy. A person who is focusing on muscle toning and building would use these exercises to reach a goal. Ex: lifting weights, football Key Standards Addressed in Unit N.C. Summer Technology Institute Mini-Unit Summative Assessment Description Students will watch a Prezi presentation to determine what physical fitness, physical activity and exercise influence their lifestyle. They will choose a You Tube video embedded in the Prezi, listen to the workout and get an understanding of the job of a personal trainer. Students would then summarize the video and include what types of exercises, (aerobic or anaerobic) the trainer used, providing specific names. Additionally, they would determine what goal the athlete was trying to obtain. Lastly, students will comment on two of their classmates You Tube Videos and explain how theirs differed. Lesson One Content Objectives: Students will understand 1. the relationship between physical fitness, physical activity and exercise. 2. the differences between physical exercise and physical activity. 3. the components to anaerobic and aerobic exercises. The wikispace allows students to express how their opinion differs about the videos and what they see is important. 3. Questions help prompt students in learning and knowing what is important.
