COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Marketing I is an introductory course in business and marketing concepts. The course takes students
through topics on basic marketing and economic concepts, the free enterprise system, legal and ethical
issues concerning marketers, selling, advertising and promotion. In addition, communication,
interpersonal leadership and technology skills will be developed, as well as employability and career
development strategies. Students also have the option to join DECA, a national marketing club, which
provides the opportunity for competition, travel, scholarships, leadership, and community service.
COURSE OUTLINE:
The following topics will be covered throughout the semester:

Mathematics – Merchandising

Information Management

Business Concepts

Career Development

Marketing Fundamentals
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
1. Be ready to learn when the bell rings.
2. Respect each other, the facilities, the materials, and me.
a. Do not prohibit other students from learning.
b. Make sure your workstation is clean before leaving class.
c. NO lining up at the door.
d. Sleeping is NEVER allowed in class. Rest at home.
3. There is zero tolerance for cheating and/or plagiarism. Copying other students’ documents or
work is considered cheating.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
1. A pen & pencil
2. Notebook paper
3. Spiral Notebook
TEXTBOOK:
Used in class. If necessary, textbooks can be checked out to complete work due to absences.
TARDY POLICY:
This class will follow the student tardy policy. Please reference page 23 in Student Handbook for FSHS
policy. Being tardy is unacceptable and will result in detentions and call to parents.
CELL PHONE POLICY:
This class will follow the student cell phone policy. Please reference page 41 for FSHS policy. Failure to
follow the policy will result in detentions and call to parents.
ABSENCES/MAKE-UP WORK:
Good attendance is crucial. Every student missing class for any reason is responsible for the notes and
any work assigned. You will not be allowed to use my notes from the lecture. If you miss chapter notes
you may check out a textbook. All lectures are from the textbook; therefore you are responsible for the
information missed.
For excused absence, you will have two days to make up work for every day you were absent, UNLESS
you make other arrangements with me AS SOON as you return.
For unexcused absences, you will receive a zero for any work due that day.
LATE WORK:
I do allow late work. 20% of possible points will be deducted from the final grade which means that an
80% is the maximum you can receive for late work. All work for the first half of the semester must be
turned in one week prior to the end of that quarter (1st or 3rd), no exceptions. All work for the second
half of the semester must be turned in two weeks prior to the end of the semester, no exceptions.
GRADING:
Each unit will include a variety of methods of learning. This includes, but are not limited to direct
instruction, primary sources, projects, and in class discussions.
Grading for this course is based on the completion of Projects/activities (30-40 points each) and
assessments (30-50 points each). Each item is assigned a point value for the purpose of grading. This
course will have both a semester project and a comprehensive final.
Grading Scale:
100-90 A
89-80 B
79-70 C
69-60 D
*Teacher’s Right: I reserve the right to amend this syllabus at any point in time.
Below 60% = F

If you have any questions concerning your grade or need help on an assignment my door is always open.
I will be in my room before and after school almost every day. If your parents/guardians have any
questions, they can contact me at the school to set up an appointment. Your success is important so
please don’t hesitate to come and visit with me. Let’s have a great year!
