Day: Friday COURSE MATERIALS: TEXT: Computers, Understanding Technology 3rd Edition Two-pocket folder, color Yellow, Memory Stick/Thumb drive (any amount of memory size). Computer Use on Campus: There is a computer lab located inside the Library Learning Information Center (LLIC) and off the commons near the Bookstore. Most local libraries have computer stations for the public to use. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Prepares the student for the on-going ethical, environmental, societal and global issues of technology. Presents computer concepts including input and output of data and how information is processed, stored, and shared. Examines the purpose of networks, their technologies, scopes, and connectivity issues. Gives major consideration to Internet technology and access emphasizing research, education, communication, e-commerce, and security. Provides an introduction to software engineering and the analysis and design of computer systems. Discusses computer platforms, architectures, and system software. Develops PC competencies and skills including file management, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation graphics, database, Internet, Web pages, and graphics. Credit may be earned in CST 133 or CIS 133, but not both. COURSE NOTES: Plagiarism: Any work that I determine to be plagiarized will receive a no-credit grade and possible removal from the course. Plagiarized means written or electronic material copied from a text or from another student's work. If one part of an assignment is determined to be plagiarized, the entire assignment is in question. Class Participation: If you do not participate in the mandatory Discussion Board assignments, as an instructor, I reserve the right to drop due to poor attendance or lack of participation. Withdrawal deadline: To receive a withdrawal grade, the student must fill out the proper forms at the Registration Center or http://www.delta.edu/regis/droppingcrses.htm . Failure to attend class is NOT withdrawal. However, the instructor reserves the right to drop students from the course due to poor attendance or lack of participation and prerequisite skills. If you feel you have a grade error contact me immediately. Labs: There are about 12 labs. Your lab work is very important in your learning process. Completed lab assignments should be placed in your folder. Labs: Introduction, Windows XP, Internet, Word Processing, System, and Presentation Graphics lab (Skip P-4) are ALL due by June 8 Labs: Unix, Spreadsheet, Visual Basic (DO only VB-1), Advanced Windows XP and Database are ALL due by June 22. Keep all graded work until the end of the semester. All lab assignments are graded on a 10-point basis. The labs can be found at http://www.delta.edu/cst/cst133_labs.html Any assignments that have you using your Delta College e-mail must have the appropriate SUBJECT line: class, section number name and your name again in the e-mail message. All e-mail messages sent to the Instructor it is mandatory that the messages are composed and sent using Delta’s Webmail, MyDelta account; including who you are in the SUBJECT line otherwise the message will not be read. For example: CST 133-06, Cynthia Drouse again, include your name in the body of the e-mail message. In Class Final PowerPoint project and PowerPoint Presentations are scheduled on June 22. You must be present in class to receive any points. Discussion Board Assignments: Are mandatory and graded. Each week there will be a discussion that will be posted. These discussions can be viewed in your packet in educator or using the Communication button in Educator and click on the sublink, Discussion Board to participate. Discussions are not read or graded after the due date. You will be required to reply to my message and you must reply to at least “one” critical friend (classmate) post for full credit. The reply messages are to be medium length. Not just a reply that states “I agree with you Sally.” Quizzes: Closed book quizzes: (2) 5 – question quizzes will be on your vocabulary list. The quizzes will consist of a 5 question T/F and a 5-question Matching. You must take quizzes in the Testing Center on chapters 1 – 8 excluding chapter 5, 7 and 9. These quizzes are due by June 8. Quizzes on chapters 10 – 15 are due by June 22. These quizzes will come from the vocabulary words that are uploaded in the packet Vocabulary Words. Click on Course documents then click on Packets, choose Vocabulary link. Choose the chapter vocabulary. I suggest you read about each word on the list in the chapter and know the meaning of the vocabulary word given in the chapter. Also, there is a 10 question timed exam due by May 18, this quiz is the only quiz that be taken at home the rest of the quizzes must be done in the Testing Center. This 10 question timed quiz covers the notes on the Announcement section in Educator and the content found on the syllabus. Read the directions carefully and do not access the quiz until you are ready to begin. You are allowed one access per quiz. Make sure you are away from distractions when entering the quiz. You will not be allowed another opportunity to take the quiz. Exams: There will be a comprehensive Midterm and a comprehensive Final exam in Educator to be taken from home, consisting of multiple-choice questions. Midterm must be taken on or before June 8, 2009 and the Final exam must be taken on or before June 22, 2009. Projects: Two projects will be discussed in class during the semester once you have completed the software necessary to do the project. These projects will be done using MSWord and PowerPoint; The PowerPoint project will be done in class during the semester. Attendance is required. Penalties: A deadline for submitting your assignments will be set, see above. Labs: Introduction, Windows XP, Internet, Word Processing, System and Presentation are ALL due on or before the Midterm. Labs: Unix, Spreadsheet, Visual Basic and Advanced Windows XP are ALL due one week before the end of the semester. DO NOT miss a deadline. No late assignments will be accepted after the due dates.
