Australia – Down Under In
What kind of people
live in Australia?
We are in a country which
has people from all over the
world
.
Is Australia just a
large desert?
Do Australians speak
like the British?
Many people say that when
Australians speak we don´t
open our months. So we don´t
sound like we are from
Britain-we just sound strange.
.
Most of Australia is
desert.There is a small
population.Most people live
in cities. We do not ride
kangaroos to school, or kill
crocodiles to eat for lunch.

DIDGERIDOO
A REALLY TRULY AUSSIE SOUND
- didgeridoo´s birth story: once the women of a tribe in Northern
Queensland were picking up wood for fire. One of the logs in the wood pile was
hollow. The wind began to blow and a strange sound was coming from a hollow
log….
- didgeridoo is a straight hollow, usually 1-1.5m long piece of timbe,
decorated with ochre paintings symbolizing the foods and totems
of the tribe that use it (made from eucalyptus tree, from
branches or trunks hollowed out by termites).
- it´s played like a trumpet (technique called“circular breathing“based on blowing without stopping). The sound going for 10 minutes.
- didgeridoo – today is popular around the world (a souvenir from
Australia).
- there are didgeridoo clubs and societies to gather and share
knowledge of playing the instrument.

The Great Barrier Reef – a
unique piece of Australia
Is longer than the Great Wall of China
Is the only living thing visible from space
Is the world´s largest living stucture
Is located along the coast of Queensland in north-east Australia
Is one of the seven natural wonders of the world
In 1768 the first European, the Frenchman called Louis de
Bougainville, made a record of the colourful world below
June 11, 1770,James Cook made contact with the reef by
running ship aground on it (he could claim the reef for Britain)

A comlex ecosystem
The Great Barrier Reef is not continuous over its
2.600km length
It is made up of 3,000 reef systems and hundreds of stunning
tropical islands.
The whole coral reef is one of the most biologically diverse
ecosystems on earth, rivaled only by tropical rainforests.
The reef consists of not only hard and soft corals , but it is
home to many species of fish, sponges, crustaceans,
molluscs, sea urchins, sea turtles, sharks, dolphins…
Many of the species are unique to the reef and threatened.

Danger to the reef
Dangers come from many sources (natural, man-made).
A list of threats include natural events (hurricanes, storms or
abnormal levels of sunlight caused by climate change or overfishing,
oil tankers.
Farming can be another threat (pesticides and fertilisers into
rivers, into seas.
Mud from rivers wash out to sea and prevents light reaching the
coral ( important for polyps to make food through photosynthesis).
The zooxanthellae are sensitive to changes in the sea water
environment.
WHEN THEY DIE THE CORAL ALSO DIES.
