Concept of SKU (Skill Units) in Custom Apps
Service Line
Principle
• SKU is a combination of Role + Primary Skill . Primary Skill is defined at
appropriate level of granularity to enable hiring based on demand
forecast/ project needs and manage supply using cross-skilling/ up-skilling
of secondary skills
• E.g. Developer Junior – Java, Developer Junior – Java Web, Developer
Junior – Java Swing
• SKU is mapped to a Job Based Certification comprising of Job definition,
KPPs and mandatory trainings across 4 dimensions : Technical, Process,
Other process, Tools and Behavior.
Potential Benefits for streamlining recruitment in FT
• Standard Job description associated with SKU covering primary skills ;
option to specify secondary skills
• Replacing TP1 interviews by IKM tests aligned to SKUs

Ideas for closer collaboration…1 of 2
 Service Lines to play more active role in recruitment and
interaction with vendors;
 Workshops to increase vendor awareness of skill profiles/SKUs/
domain specific requirements
 Address the requirement of multiple skills, especially in custom
applications, through SKUs + secondary skills in job description
provided to vendors
 Focus on quality …in addition to quantity; increase selection
ratios
 Incorporate inputs from Service Lines into the curriculum of training
run by vendors
 More robust pre-screening by vendors based on guidelines from
Service Lines
 Explore the possibility of vendors using IKM for pre-screening for
specific SKUs with high volume

Ideas for closer collaboration…2 of 2
 Reach out to passive job seekers for niche skills and
specialized profiles (E.g. Technical Architects)
 Vendor enablement for HCL brand selling
 Minimizing reneges by keeping the candidate warm
