The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), a scientific association of almost 11,000 members who
are employed in industry, academia, government and other research institutes worldwide, is seeking a Database
Administrator/Junior Application Developer for its Arlington, VA office.
Founded in 1986, AAPS provides a dynamic international forum for the exchange of knowledge among scientists to
enhance their contributions to public health. AAPS offers timely scientific programs, ongoing education, information
resources, opportunities for networking, and professional development.
The Database Administrator/Junior Application Developer (DA/JAD) is responsible for all aspects of developing,
implementing, and enhancing applications and data mining for AAPS. The DA/JAD works with the Application Developer
on complex projects, applying both technical and communications skills to maximize the value of AAPS’ systems and
services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


















General
Remain up to date on the latest programming and web technology.
Work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
Gather requirements and feedback from end users for web/database projects.
Work with other developers and vendors to maintain documentation and versioning systems and/or processes.
Application Development
Develop applications using Visual Basic .Net, AJAX, ASP.Net, and Java.
Use versioning control to maintain consistency and accuracy with custom applications.
Work with the Application developer to develop, troubleshoot, and manage applications.
Develop, code, install, test, debug, and document Web applications using appropriate editors and/or programs;
Identify, recommend, and prioritize new web features and applications in conjunction with business leaders and
department managers.
Work with the content manager to identify improvements to the website.
Perform routine maintenance including but not limited to managing domain registrations and security
certificates (SSL); ensure site accuracy and currency and security of web sites and related applications; perform
periodic web site usage; produce web site usage reports to monitor traffic and performance.
Diagnose and troubleshoot problems with existing Web applications and web sites.
Perform cost-benefit analysis of proposed web implementations.
Conduct research into current and emerging web technologies and issues in support of Web development
efforts.
Assist in determining appropriate technology solutions for new systems implementations.
Database Administration
Manage the association database (iMIS) and provide support for the iMIS modules.
Respond to and resolve database access and performance issues.
Monitor database system details within the database, including stored procedures and execution time, and
implement efficiency improvements.
Plan and coordinate data migrations between systems.







Prepare file extracts for both internal and external use.
Maintain user defined fields within the iMIS system.
Create, or support creation of, required reports in response to business user needs.
Prepare and deliver reports including developing system-wide reports on data systems.
Assist staff with developing, maintaining reports using Crystal Reports and other reporting tools.
Write and maintain technical documentation.
Other duties as assigned.
Successful Candidate Will Have:







A strong understanding of Internet programming languages.
Proven experience in maintaining web servers; strong technical experience with designing, building, installing,
configuring and supporting database servers.
Ability to learn, understand, and apply new technologies.
Ability to remain proactive.
Proficient at using system lifecycle methodologies for developing and maintaining applications.
Bachelor's degree (BA/BS); and two to four years related experience; or equivalent combination of education
and experience.
Experience with the following Web technologies, protocols, applications, and tools: .Net, XML, CSS, HTML, ASP,
Java, Visual Basic, iMIS or other AMS', SQL, IIS, and versioning applications.
