The Northern Territory Government announced a significant investment in education in the
Northern Territory with the construction of a new purpose built facility for the Northern
Territory Open Education Centre (NTOEC).
The NTOEC is a senior secondary distance education school catering for years 10 - 12,
providing flexible distance study options to over 600 students across the Northern Territory.
This investment includes a contribution from the INPEX operated Ichthys LNG project as
part of their ongoing commitment to supporting the local community.
The proposed new facility will be built in the grounds of Darwin High School and will
become part of the Bullocky Point education precinct.
The new 2100msq facility will feature a three storey building and will provide state of the art
premises and technology to meet the specialist educational needs of senior secondary
students accessing learning through distance.
It will also accommodate the business administration area for Darwin High School and a
modern front entrance for parents and visitors to both schools.
Traffic management and parking, both during the construction phase and on completion of
the facility, is being considered as part of the design and planning process.
The project is being managed by the Department of Infrastructure on behalf of the
Department of Education.
The Department of Lands, Planning and the Environment (DLPE) has advised that the
proposed building has been assessed as being fully compliant with the Northern Territory
Planning Scheme. This means it is in line with the principles and type of land use permitted
under the scheme.
The facility will be designed and built to the standards required by the Building Code of
Australia and statutory and local authority requirements.
Stakeholders will be kept informed of progress on the project through the Education
website (www.education.nt.gov.au) and, once construction commences, through
newspaper advertising.
