Files and folders FILES Windows Explorer Windows XP, Vista, 7 File Explorer Windows 8 Finder (Mac) Get Explorer by: Right-click START, Save (as), or E + Windows key Filename.extension (or .qualifier) file.xxx .pdf (eg U3A newsletter) .doc/docx (produced by WORD) .xls/xlsx (produced by EXCEL) photos or images (don’t worry what the letters stand for!) .jpg, .png, .bmp, .tiff, .gif FOLDERS Holders for files – any number, any type To suit you – easier to find/save Manipulate: Files or Folders can be CUT = copy and delete COPY = copy and retain PASTE = make new copy of CUT or COPY’d file/folder RENAME (but file must not be OPEN) Can create a NEW FOLDER within an existing one FILE SIZES Photos/images larger than .doc or .xls Movies (.mpg .mp4 .mov .avi .wmv .....) much larger to huge BYTE 8 bits (binary digits = 0 or 1) KILOBYTE 1024 bytes (ie 210 ) but normally taken as 1000 = 1KB MEGABYTE 1024 KB = 1MB –normally considered 1 million bytes GIGABYTE 1000 MB = 1GB TERABYTE 1000 GB = 1TB ie if a file is 100KB, you can hold c10 million of them in 1TB
