The major topics covered in the course will be rotational motion, simple harmonic motion, fields, optics, relativity, and medical physics. Particular emphasis will be placed on technical research and writing. This course is in preparation for the IB Physics HL exam, taken as a senior. Course Schedule: This is a general schedule of topics and may be changed at the instructor’s discretion. Testing will generally be given at the end of each unit of study. Exam questions will be graded based on the IB exam mark scheme. On all tests, the IB Physics equation packet may be used. Exams will be timed and must be completed in pen. Quizzes: Quizzes may consist of IB exam questions or questions developed by the instructor. They will be graded based on an IB mark scheme. Quizzes will generally be assigned every two weeks. On all tests, the IB Physics equation packet may be used. Quizzes will be timed and must be completed in pen. Homework: Homework will be assigned daily and will be due on the assigned day at the beginning of class. Problems assigned from the textbook have answers included in the back. You are expected to check your answers before coming to class. Unless otherwise specified, homework assignments will be worth 10 points each. Investigations: Investigations will include research papers, discussions of journal articles, internal assessment work, and lab write-ups. Warm Ups: One warm up question will be assigned daily at the beginning of class. Each warm up will be worth 2 points. Warm ups cannot be made up in the event that they are missed due to absence or tardy. These questions will be previous IB exam questions. Late Work Policy: Late work will be accepted at 10% off for each school day (not class day) late. Thus, late work turned in two weeks past the due date will be awarded no points. Class Rules: 1. Be Respectful! – Respect me. Respect others. Respect yourself. 2. Be Responsible! – Come to class prepared and ready to learn. Consequences: I strive to maintain a controlled and effective classroom. In the event that either of the class rules is broken, it will result in the following consequences (in order of severity). 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Verbal correction Conference between teacher and student Parent contact Conference between student, parent, and teacher Office referral Personal Electronic Devices: Electronic devices such as, but not limited to cell phones, mp3 players, and gaming devices are a distraction to the student and others around him/her. Per district policy, these devices are not to be used during class, and use will result in the device being confiscated for the remainder of the class period by the teacher. Refusal to immediately give up the device will result in security being called. Academic Honesty: As an IB student, academic honesty is a serious issue and will be treated as such. In the event that an issue arises, school leadership will be involved, and removal from the IB diploma programme may result.
