Cell Analogy Introduction Cells need to carry out the same basic functions that we do to sustain life. The difference is that cells do this with much smaller parts. These smaller structures that allow the cell to function are called organelles – “tiny organs”. Introduction Cont’d It’s only common sense that if you are able to relate things you learned in class to everyday things, you are more likely to remember them. It’s not everyday that you and your friends sit around at Starbucks discussing the rough endoplasmic reticulum. However, you probably do discuss things like cars, your homes, places to visit, etc. Task Your group will come up with an analogy for the cell of your choice (plant or animal) and its organelles. Your analogy will be represented in the form of an individual drawing, map, or diagram that represents a cell and its organelles. Procedures: 1. As a group, come up with an idea for your analogy 2. Create a table comparing 8 organelles of your choosing (from your chart) to the different parts of your analogy (each person should have this). Example: Organelle Analogy Lysosomes Lysosomes get rid of waste in the cell. They are similar to garbage cans in an amusement park because that is where waste is deposited. 3. Draw a picture/diagram of your analogy. Be Creative! A number on your picture/diagram will correspond to a number on your table. Grade – 28 points 2 points for each organelle on your chart (16 points total) How that organelle relates to the cell How that organelle relates to your analogy 8 points for map/diagram There will be 8 pictures on your map with numbers corresponding to the chart 4 points additional for creativity, neatness & effort Each person will turn in: A completed chart You will work on this in a group but everyone must have it A diagram, map, drawing (whatever you choose for your analogy) that is labeled with numbers which correspond to your chart.
