Chorus Students Students are given the opportunity to advance their singing skills through Chorus. The classes are formed during the first 2 weeks of school. Students need only express a desire to be a part of Chorus to become a member as there are no audition requirements. Typically, there are two after-school concerts in the school year. These concerts feature both Chorus and Band students. The Directors coordinate the programs so that conflicts are avoided for students who choose to participate in both performing groups. Students who desire to participate in the Spring Musical must attend Chorus at least one time a week. Band Students Band students must practice at home during the school year and submit parent-signed practice forms. Students who are struggling academically should be cautioned due to these extra time de- mands. Band students must demonstrate self-control so they can care for the valuable instruments and so others may learn without interruption. Attendance is required at after-school concerts. Currently, elementary band students have two after-school concerts per school year. Every band student will need a properly working instrument. Instruments are available from many music stores such as Willis Music, Buddy Rogers Music, and Wert Music in our immediate area. The most common way of getting an instrument is renting. When one rents/leases an instrument, payments typically go toward owning the instrument and repairs during the lease are usually covered. You may choose to get an instrument from a friend, relative, garage sale, or pawnshop; however, repairs are not covered and the instrument will likely need some work to bring it into proper playing condition. This wise investment in repairs often makes the difference between quick success and frustrating delays. Many musical instrument dealers have repair shops. I strongly caution parents to avoid buying instruments from department stores since local instrument repair shops will not typically service them. Also, the internet brand-new “deal” is often an unplayable waste of money. Additional Supplies: Clarinet and saxophone players will always need at least four good reeds in their cases (ex: Rico #3 thickness for clarinet; Rico #2 thickness for saxophone). Brass players will always need a bottle of oil in their cases. Percussion players will need a bell/drum kit and a stick bag containing drums sticks and bell mallets. Here are some questions you may want to ask about a rental/lease plan: Is the monthly fee applied toward the purchase of the instrument? (Fees applied from the entire loan or a maximum of 1 year?) If I rent a used instrument or a drum/bell kit, can that rental money be applied toward the purchase of a different instrument? Are repairs covered? (Is insurance included in the rent or is it extra?) If the instrument needs to be repaired is a substitute instrument provided? Can I purchase a home music stand at a discount price? (this helps posture) Band Students… Check one below and complete. ___1. (usual) Student’s parent/guardian will arrange to have the instrument (borrow, rent, buy, etc.) Specific instrument name________________ (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, percussion, etc.) ___2. (very rarely) Student does not have an instrument; attempts have been made to borrow an instrument but have been unsuccessful; financially it is not possible to rent or purchase an instrument at this time. The student has a good work ethic and applies it to schoolwork. The student is responsible and would show respect for an instrument (parent responsible for damages). The only way this student is able to participate is if the director supplies an instrument of his choice (extremely limited availability).
