Junior High Music Teacher: Adam Phares Time: Monday 11:15-12:15, Thursday 9:00-10:00, Friday 11:15-12:15 Course Outline: Junior High music has 3 main components: a performance component, a music theory component, and a music and society component. Along with our many school-wide performances, students will also be given the opportunity to perform at the London Kiwanis Music Festival at which they will receive an adjudication from a band music expert. In the theory component, they will increase their knowledge of written music (including scales, key signatures etc.) in order to prepare them for high school music classes. In the music and society component, students will look at the development of popular music, and will explore the ways in which music shapes our society. Class Expectations: Students are expected to come to each and every music class with the following items: o Their instrument in good working order. If their instrument is out for repairs, or unavailable for some other reason, please send in a note with your son/daughter and arrangements will be made for the student to borrow an instrument from the school if possible. o Reeds for their instrument if necessary. These may be purchased from a music store, or from the music classroom ($2 for clarinet reeds, $2.50 for saxophone reeds). o Their music folder containing class handouts, and music o A pencil o Additional supplies as needed Students are expected to practice at least 1 hour per week at home. This time may be divided up any way that fits the family schedule. Students will be required to make a practice schedule and submit a copy on Thursday, October 1st. It is recommended that this schedule be adhered to as much as possible so that it becomes part of the weekly routine.
