LATIN AND GREEK

Scientific Prefixes & Suffixes (LATIN AND GREEK)
You will learn the following Latin and Greek elements in groups of approximately ten. During the first three weeks of
school you are responsible for knowing the meanings of the first ten words and their use in building words. You will
be quizzed on them during the second and third weeks of the period. Set #2 will be learned during week 4 and tested
over during weeks 5 and 6, and so on.
Following is a list of word groups and the first date upon which you may be quizzed on them. You are responsible for
knowing not only the new set of ten, but every set previous to that…it is cumulative and comprehensive.
Each time you are assigned a new set of words, you may earn up to five points (added to your cumulative point total)
by forming ten words using the new elements. You may use a word from the list and a new one that does not appear
on the list, or two off of the list, but use at least one element from the list for that period. After selecting a legitimate
compound word, you must define it using only the meanings given. Then, you must give the official biological
definition of the word from a dictionary.
You may not use a word twice from one set of Latin elements to the next. You must PROVE that you are learning
new words by including a list of previously used words at the beginning of the next assignment…see example below.
If any part of the assignment is neglected, you may forfeit any bonus points that were offered. ALWAYS, ALWAYS,
ALWAYS turn in work that is the BEST you are capable of.
