February Program
President’s Message
Hello fellow APICS Members and Enthusiasts,
This month we are pleased to welcome to our PDM
members and guests of ASQ, American Society for
Quality, a global leader in quality improvement and
standards. Together, our two organizations will
come together to network and learn about the
North Carolina Center for Global Logistics. Charles
Edwards is Executive Director of the Center
dedicated to the expansion of logistics education
programs from high school to graduate school
throughout the State of North Carolina. Please join
us and take the opportunity to meet new
acquaintances and establish new professional
connections.
Can you believe we are already more than half way
through our 2015-16 program year! Where does
the time go? Mark Twain once said “The secret of
getting ahead is getting started.” Consider this as
you explore ways to develop your strengths and
expand your potential. Mike Carpenter will be
offering an educational event / review class in the
Hickory area for CPIM module – Detailed Scheduling
and Planning beginning 18-February. If you were
considering working towards an APICS certification,
now is the time to take action. Don’t miss this
opportunity. Register or request more details by
contacting Mike at mike2842@embarqmail.com.
Remember that we have a team competition
underway at our PDM’s that incents attendance and
idea generation. Current team scores show that
Ken Donham’s team is in first place, followed by Lori
Bishop’s. Points are awarded based on attendance,
guests invited, and best ideas generated and puzzle
solving. Bring your “A-game” in February to earn
points for your team!
I look forward to seeing you all in February!
Mr. Edwards will discuss a new study funded by MHI and
conducted by the Supply Chain Resources Cooperative at
NC State. The formal release of the study will be at the
CSCMP meeting on Feb 9 in Charlotte. Mr. Edwards was
one of the technical advisors for the study.
Charles Edwards is Executive Director of the North
Carolina Center for Global Logistics. The Center is
dedicated to the expansion of logistics education
programs from high school to graduate school
throughout the State of North Carolina. The Center
provides instruction, outreach, and logistics-focused
advisory services to businesses, government agencies
and the military. Edwards began his career in the logistics
industry as a truck driver. He was on the senior
management team of the North Carolina-based airline
that started United Parcel Service Airlines, helped
introduce an innovative container to the international
airline industry, managed a commercial airport, led the
development of the world's largest air vehicle, and has
been a senior advisor to public and private aviation and
logistics projects in the United States, Europe, Africa,
Southeast Asia and the United Arab Emirates. He is the
past Chairman of Dubai based Freight Reach Services, LLC
which provides freight forwarding services in the UAE
and East African countries. He holds degrees from
universities in Canada, the United Kingdom and the
United States. He served on the faculty of the Darden
School and has been a guest lecturer at universities
throughout North Carolina and the U.S. He is a frequent
speaker and writer about aviation and logistics topics and
in 2010 co-authored Transport Logistics: The Wheel of
Commerce. Mr. Edwards hosts the UNC-Chapel Hill Tsinghua University Logistics EMBA program in Dubai and
is co-developer of the Air Cargo Professional
Development workshop program of The International Air
Cargo Association. He also serves on various
international and US logistics industry, company and
education boards.
Sincerely,
Debbie Boyle, CSCP
