Rachel Ogilvie Vice President Student Events 2015 -2016 Platform About Me: My name is Rachel Ogilvie. I am a first year Food and Nutrition student and I want to represent you as your vice president of student events on the Brescia University College Students’ Council (BUCSC) in 2015-2016. Some of the ideas that I would like to bring forward are: More collaboration with Brescia clubs throughout awareness events o Examples are listed below o Exception being the Get Real Movement Club from Western HBK Events o It has been known that after orientation week our HBK events are very minimal. I hope to change this by hosting an event in mid-fall that would allow for the affiliate schools to get to know each other and show their affiliate spirit. Details are listed below. Better communication between clubs o Inter Club Council could be a mini council strictly for presidents of each Brescia club and would provide clubs an easier way to talk about their event ideas and things they are planning to the VP student events. By doing this, it would better our communications for promotional information as well as more participation. Summer Training & BOOM Day o I have found some activities that may be fun for council which are listed below. Bi-Weekly Meetings with all BUCSC Commissioners o This will relieve some of the anxiety between executives and general members on council and allow for a better relationship between the portfolio holder and the commissioners. As well, it will provide support for the commissioners planning events and how to go about it until they are more comfortable in their positions. Awareness Events Pride Week o Pride week at Brescia is able to celebrate the LGBT culture and community, so what better way than to have one of Western’s very own clubs come out and support us: The Get Real Movement. This club could be given the opportunity to speak to students about homophobia and the importance of eliminating homophobia. They could also run their “We Get Real” campaign at Brescia to encourage more students to celebrate and support those in the LGBT community. Mental Health Awareness Week o Mental Health Awareness Week is all about educating students on their mental health and providing coping mechanisms that will help students. It is to my belief that incorporating and continuing to team up with Brescia clubs such as Jack.org and in the future, Brescia Psychology Association, that it could broaden our resources, as well as increase attendance. Note: For Eating Disorders Awareness Week, the awareness commissioner should also continue to collaborate with CAFP and SHEA throughout the week for the same reasons listed above. International Women’s Day o International Women’s Day is something that I think should be celebrated at Brescia in future years. This awareness day speaks strongly for what Brescia stands for and is a day to celebrate women. This day can inspire students to be empowering role models and make a difference in society. One activity that can boost student’s confidence is by having a student sit on a chair behind a white board and having others write a positive phrase about them, then take a picture. Don't let them see it...till they get the photo! Such a great end of the year activity or for those days when students are using unkind words about one another and need a little empowerment and confidence in their day. Alcohol Awareness o With many events that permit alcohol, it may bring rise to the importance of Alcohol Awareness on campus. With the possibility of having more events having alcohol present, I think this would be a step in the right direction. o The Brescia Psychology Association could also join forced with our awareness commissioner if needed to help plan this week. Spirit Events MORE HBK Events o HBK Fall Fever Mid-October (3rd/4th Week) In the back field between Huron and Brescia?? Flag Football Games between affiliates (maybe half time show; cheerleaders or some entertainment?) Photo booth Alcohol? (potentially, if this was something that is possible; I really have no clue, just a random thought) Pumpkin Beer Sangria Non Alcoholic Beverage: Apple Cider Pie eating contest Pumpkin carving Apple bobbing Morale Events BOOM Day o Two Truths and a Lie (Time Required: 15-30 minutes) Start out by having every team member secretly write down two truths about themselves and one lie on a small piece of paper – Do not reveal to anyone what you wrote down! Once each person has completed this step, allow 10-15 minutes for open conversation where everyone quizzes each other on their three questions. The idea is to convince others that your lie is actually a truth, while on the other hand, you try to guess other people’s truths/lies by asking them questions. Don’t reveal your truths or lie to anyone – even if the majority of the room already has it figured out! After this period, gather in a circle and one by one repeat each one of your three statements and have the group vote on which one they think is the lie. You can play this game competitively and award points for each lie you guess or for tricking other players on your own lie. This game helps to encourage better communication, as well as it lets you get to know council better. Summer Training o Campfire/Memory Wall For: Team Bonding & Icebreakers What You’ll Need: Post-It notes or a whiteboard Write a few general work-related topics on the white board or on sticky notes posted to the wall: “My first day,” “Teamwork,” “Work travel,” etc. Gather your team together and have everyone choose one of the topics and share a story from their time with the BUCSC to laugh and bond over shared experiences. Or, pass out sticky notes and have everyone write down positive memories of working together or special accomplishments. They can use words or pictures to record these memories. Then have everyone share their memory and post it on the wall, forming a positive memory cloud. o Stereotype Party Write on nametags many different 'personality types (see the list below), and pin or tape one tag to each person's back. Don't show people which tag is on their back – they'll be able to see everyone else's tag, but not their own. Now, ask each person to figure out which personality type is on his or her back by asking stereotype-based questions of other people – “Am I a man?” “Am I an athlete?” “Am I an entertainer?” and so on. Allow group members to answer only yes or no, and encourage participants to ask questions to as many different people as possible. Here are some personality types you could consider: o Auto mechanic. o Olympic medalist. o Professor. o Fast-food restaurant worker. o Postal worker. o Movie star. Brescia Clubs/ BUCSC Commissioners Inter Club Council o Meet with club representatives/ presidents bi-weekly or monthly to organize events and sustain balance between clubs. This will allow for better collaboration between the BUCSC and Brescia clubs, and help to promote events earlier by having them on the calendar ahead of time. Commissioner Meetings o Meet with BUCSC commissioners bi-weekly to help with ideas for events, preparation, and planning of events. This should help to better communication between executives and general members, relieve some of the anxiety between executives and general members, as well as help them to achieve their goals for the year.
