Course Description: Explore American literature while engaging in the discussion of God’s grandeur. Through reading, students will see the many different ways Americans have described the nation. The class seizes the opportunity to analyze, in discussion and essays, the many ways American novelists have aligned and differed with the Christian worldview. Visiting with a famous fisherman, a runaway slave and a dystopian hero, the class learns how to parse out what an author is saying, how literary tools enhance writing, and how to articulate what they are learning in written form. During student led discussions, the relevancy of the literature is discussed and evaluated. In the third quarter, students master the process of writing a lengthy research paper with five to seven sources.
Papers, weekly vocabulary quizzes from the reading, and essay tests are regular assignments.
