• Father imprisoned him and his siblings in the
dark underworld of Tartarus
• His mother freed them and he led them to
overthrow their father.
• Brother and sister get married.
• He swallowed all of his children so they
could not overthrow him except Zeus.
• Also know as the Mother of the Gods
• She hid Zeus in Crete so he could be
protected from his father and grow up then
return to overthrow his father.

HESTIA – Virgin Goddess of the Hearth
 Eldest/youngest daughter
 Never married and refused her
hand to her brother Poseidon
and Apollo.
 Her name means “home and
hearth”
 Receiving of the first offering at
every sacrifice within the home.
 An Olympian, but later
replaced by Dionysus, her
nephew.
HERA – Goddess of Women,
Marriage and Childbirth
Also known as the Queen of
the Gods/Heaven
Sister and jealous wife of
Zeus, had 4 offspring
Anger was directed to the
numerous lovers Zeus
had, his offspring
especially Hercules.
DEMETER – Goddess of Agriculture
Refused her hand to brother
Poseidon
 Fled to Arcadia disguised as a mare, he
found her, went to her as a stallion and
they had the horse Arion
 Married her brother Zeus, had
Persephone who was abducted by
their brother Hades.
 Zeus demanded Hades release
Persephone but the deal made was she
must return to the Underworld for four
months of the year.
HADES – God of the Underworld
Ruler of the dead,
did not serve as a
judge of the dead
Underworld
consisted of
different areas for
the souls to go
Cerberus was a
three-headed guard
dog for Hades
POSEIDON – God of the Sea
Second in power amongst
the Gods
His Trident could cause
earthquakes and storms,
called “Earth-Shaker”.
Competed with Athena for
the power of the city of
Athens and lost to her gift
of an olive tree
ZEUS
ZEUS – King of Gods, God of
Thunder
 His thunderbolt would
be hurled at those who
angered him
 His shield “Aegis” could
create all natural air and
sky phenomena's.
 Known as the protector
and ruler of mortals
 Notorious for having
many wives, lovers and
offspring!!
 Athena was his favourite
child.
