Third Grade Thoughts Phew! We made it through. State testing went very well. Thank you for your support. You will be able to view your child’s scores on Skyward Family Access and they’ll be mailed to you this summer. Math Highlights: We’ve learned several methods of multiplication: traditional, lattice, box, and partial products as well as positive and negative number awareness. Students should continue to spend 5-10 minutes a night drilling multiplication and division facts. Our final math unit is on measurement and data. We will review length and cover volume, weight, capacity, mean, median, coordinate grids and frequency distributions. Language Arts Highlights: We have one more benchmark test. I hope to see the test taking skills we practiced carry over to this test. These are the skills we are concentrating on: generalizations, main idea, cause and effect, fact and opinion, sequence, May 1, 2015 author's purpose, genre, character, compound words, unfamiliar words, synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms. We are working on two plays, “April’s Rebellion” and “The Great Vegetable Crisis.” A performance date will be sent home soon. Writing Students are working hard on their persuasive writing. They are anxious to give their speech and see if they can convince their audience in order to make a change. Wax Museum: This month students will write biographies. A detailed letter explaining this project is coming home today. The only task that needs to be completed at home is creating a costume and gathering props. Our class will open our very own wax museum for one day only on May 20th from 8:15-8:35 a.m. in the Media Center. The students will be required to memorize their speech, dress up as their hero, bring in props and become a ‘waxed’ statue of their person. The Great Body Shop Our May health unit is called “When Bodies Have Problems.” The focus of this unit is on learning about people who face serious physical and cognitive challenges in their daily lives, such as hearing impairment or a learning disability. When the pamphlet comes home, please look it over with your child and ask him/her to explain some of the things he/she has learned. send a beverage and bag lunch with your child on Thursday, June 4th for our end of the year celebration. Thank you to Ann Empkey, who has generously volunteered to take the lead in planning this day. The success of this day is dependent on parent volunteers. Please contact Ann if you would like to help out with this fun and memorable celebration. Ann Empkey empkey5@comcast.net May Birthdays: May 7 May 19 May 20 June 3 Social Studies: We are wrapping up our study of Ancient Greece, the well-known birthplace of democracy. Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt, when compared along side each other, as well as with our lives today, make for very interesting class discussions. Next, we’ll turn to the important aspects of Ancient China, another great and interesting civilization. Science In The Physics of Sound, students will learn about volume, pitch, and vibration as well as the sources and receivers of sound. In the middle of this month, students will receive information about creating a musical instrument at home, which changes pitch. These instruments are due at school on June 1st and will be presented in class. In-House Field Trip Students will participate in a parent led track and field day.
