Development of the course 3.1 Industry /enterprise/ community needs Standards 1 and 2 for Accredited Courses Acting on the advice of the Curriculum Maintenance Manager for Arts/Entertainment and Recreation Skills Victoria as copyright holder for this Crown Copyright course has determined that there is a continuing need for this course. The course was originally developed based on the need for multiskilled theatre workers who have technical skills and performance skills and who are able to develop, manage and market productions for small companies and community theatres as well as festivals and events. The course offers a balance in the development of performance, technical production, business and theatre event and festival production skills. This is advantageous in ensuring employment outcomes in various roles within the Entertainment Industry, articulation to other courses within TAFE or Higher Education and community voluntary needs. The Performing Arts is a major contributor to arts and culture nationally. Educationally it is also an important knowledge-base for the arts and humanities in general. Data in the recent Arts and Culture publication that derive from the 2006 census report that Theatre, Dance and Other Performing Arts events have the second largest 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 4 national attendance rates (behind Cinema) and Performing Artists are the second largest group for employment in Arts and Culture in Australia (behind Designers). They also report that 277,600 people performed as actors, dancers or in other performing arts roles before an audience in 2007. Investigation of the Theatre industry in Victoria shows there is an array of theatrical performances happening throughout the year at hundreds of different venues. These range from large scale international touring companies to amateur productions in schools and community halls. It should be noted that Melbourne is considered one of the major centres for theatre arts internationally- eg: the Melbourne Fringe Festival is the second largest Fringe Festival in the world and further that local councils commit substantially to cultural development through the performing arts. Accordingly, Skills Victoria has funded the re-accreditation of 21680VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts stating : Although a niche area in the performing arts, current course providers indicate an increase in demand for theatre arts training. Feedback indicates that the structure of the course should be more flexible to suit the career aspirations of students and acknowledge the increased application of technology in Theatre Arts, particularly in sound, production, stage design and lighting. This course aligns to the Victorian Government's 'Securing Jobs for Your Future - Skills for Victoria' strategy to meet the demands of users, both individuals and businesses. The course aligns to the objective of skills deepening, where courses are offered to people who are progressing to a higher level within an industry. Enrolment in the Diploma over the last three years has been : 2007 - 102 enrolments 2008 - 103 enrolments 2009 - 118 enrolments Industry experience indicates a continuing demand for theatre arts workers, managers and performers particularly in the burgeoning community theatre and events area. 3.2 Review for re-accreditation Standards 1 and 2 for Accredited Courses The 21680 VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts was developed for reaccreditation under the oversight of an industry based steering committee comprising : Brett Adam - Joint Chair Theatre Director John Butler - Joint Chair Swinburne Uni of Tech - TAFE Greg Dyson Victoria University Tracey Flanigan Merry Go Round Theatre Kim Olsen Physical Theatre Association Ben Rogan Jessica Smithett Theatre Artist Production/Stage Management Mark Wager Julia Davis Theatre Design Dream Puppets Ros Mackay Acting & Business Practice 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 5 Jill Mitchell ( for Genevieve VERVE Wearne) The course has been refined during two previous re-accreditations and it was the opinion of the steering committee that its outcomes continued to be valid. Adding to the proviso that suitable Training Package units could be utilised as electives the possibility of using suitable units from accredited courses All steering committee members undertook to consult with their industry colleagues to ensure that their views represented a broad industry view. There were two periods of extensive consultation. The first considered an initial draft and the second considered the inclusion of suitable training package units as an appendix. . A skills-knowledge profile was developed (Appendix 4) All units were mapped against the Victorian Credit Matrix and an employability skills table drawn up (Appendix 1) Students currently enrolled in 21679VIC Certificate IV in Theatre Arts may complete the existing qualification or choose to transfer to the new qualification. The PSC members introduced themselves and apologies were noted. N/A 2 Appointment of Project Steering Committee Chairperson Action 2.1 JD outlined the role of the Chair and stated that the Industry Training Advisory Board (VERVE) representative generally Chaired these meetings. As there is no VERVE representative available for this first PSC meeting, Brett Adam accepted the role. N/A 2.2 JS advised the Chair that she would be leaving early due to another appointment. N/A 3 Project Overview, Process and Update Action 3.1 JD provided a course and project overview and reported that the current courses were accredited in 2006 and due at the end of 2010. The reaccreditation process will address any changes in the Theatre Arts industry in the last 5 years (the period of accreditation), review any issues within the current course structure as well as look at impending developments over the next 5 years. N/A 3.2 JD reported that the Project Steering Committee (PSC) for re-accreditation projects usually meets a minimum of three times over the duration of the project as follows: N/A 2ndand 3rd PSC meetings are typically held at 4-6 weeks intervals. Draft course documents are normally reviewed at the 2nd PSC meeting and then circulated to Industry and other stakeholders for comment and feedback which is directed to the CMM office (JD & AH) and the Curriculum Writer (DT). The 3rd PSC meeting will be the final validation of the course documents. Extra PSC meetings can be held if further work and/or discussion are needed. 3.3 Once the course documentation is endorsed by the PSC, it is then forwarded to an Accreditation Advisor Panel for further comment and feedback, particularly to examine the course to ensure it meets AQF standards. This process can take 2/3 weeks, after which, an Accreditation Advisor Panel session is arranged with the Curriculum Writer, CMM and one PSC member in attendance. N/A 3.4 After the course is signed off by the Accreditation Advisor Panel the documentation is sent to VRQA and the course curriculum and executive summary together with a new qualification code is then posted to the Training Support Network website. N/A 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 44 Appendix 5 - Project Steering Committee minutes 3.5 PSC advised to contact JD, DT or AH for any queries relating to the existing course or the re-accreditation process. N/A 4 Role of Steering Committee Action 4.1 DT outlines the role of the PSC to those present and circulates the VRQA document ‘Role of the Steering Committee’. N/A It was explained that the role of the PSC includes: Making sure that the contents of the course meets its intentions Advising on the Skills and Knowledge required to function out in industry (i.e.: what should graduates be able to do and demonstrate knowledge of at the end of this course?) The PSC is a conduit to further advice: o Recommending further consultation (either by suggesting additional PSC members or identifying external people to consultation -eg. subject matter experts) o Finding advise on what is practiced in industry o Circulates draft documentation for input and feedback Signing off on the content of the course and confirms that the course meets it’s aims (via ‘Course Contents Endorsement Form) Confirming that the AQF level is appropriate Validating Credit Matrix level – DT to provide further info on this to PSC at subsequent meetings 4.2 BA raised query regarding the assumption that there are ready jobs out there for Theatre Arts graduates – feels this course needs to create self-directed artists. DT states that the document would need to include a realistic industry appraisal regarding the potential to make a living as a Theatre Artist Also emphasised is that this course, particularly the Certificate IV, is an introduction – there are pathways into NIDA, NICA, Masters of Education and BA’s. 4.3 GD raised query regarding the validation of feedback – if feedback from some sources were given more weighting than others? DT states that the most important comes from industry. The PSC is advised to ensure they’ve ticked off all the major groups/stakeholders in their consultation. Each PSC member to draft a list of contacts so we can ensure important people/groups are not missed and gaps in consultation can be identified. 4.4 VRQA ‘Accreditation Process Flowchart’ circulated to PSC. N/A PSC members to draft and compare contact lists for next meeting N/A DT informs PSC that we are currently at ‘Step 3: Course Development’ of this flow chart. Identifying Training Package units for use in the course – DT advises PSC that if there is a gap we’ll write our own. 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 45 Appendix 5 - Project Steering Committee minutes The PSC will establish the Skills/Knowledge outcomes of this course Two letters of support for the courses are required from industry – these will need to be from someone who is qualified to pass judgement and has not been involved in this re-accreditation process. 4.4 Query regarding if the Diploma course become an Advanced Diploma? If the PSC comes up with a very compelling industry need for an Advanced Diploma during the consultation process then this will be looked at. Or, the PSC could recommend (following an expressed industry need) the development of another qualification higher than the Diploma - then a submission can be put in to Skills Victoria for a curriculum development project N/A 5 Course Outcomes & Skills/Knowledge Profile Action 5.1 PSC wanted it noted that the outcomes could be for both paid and unpaid work. Certificate IV Basic theatre worker (paid or unpaid) o Assistant stage manager (for small events) o Assistant stage manager (ASM) o Deputy stage manager (DSM) N/A Diploma − Independent worker – high level of performance o Stage managers o Producers o Script worker 5.2 5.3 PSC noted that an important unit/theme is not included in the current course structure of ether the Cert IV or the Diploma: Develop self as artist/theatre artist (elective) DT to investigate Potential course outcomes: N/A including this unit Two outcomes Management Cert IV: Management with an appreciation & understanding of the arts & artists 5.4 Artists Diploma: Developing self further as an artist Skills Knowledge Profile for Certificate IV N/A Focus: small to medium live performances, festivals and community events. Looking at the Executive Summary for the current Cert IV the PSC which of the course outcomes are still relevant and which are missing: 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 46 Appendix 5 - Project Steering Committee minutes Relevant: − Develop basic performance skills − Develop conceptual and expressive skills as a performer − Research and Critically analyse history and theory to inform artistic practice o Can thread this as a theme through the rest − Source and apply entertainment industry knowledge o DT states can include an ‘international opportunities’ aspect to this − Provide first aid o If PSC feels this is not an industry requirement, it can be gotten rid of. o JB feels that with teaching electrics and physical theatre it is essential. It has always been a core unit in the past. − Apply basic technical production skills in audio, lighting and set construction o To be broadened to include ‘props’ and ‘costumes’ − Develop basic business skills relating to the operations and productions of small companies and community theatre o At Diploma level to include ‘working as a freelance’ Missing: − Promotion/Marketing − Personal skill: self promotion − Self as an artist − Employability Skills sets − Community – working with community groups (there is arts funding directed at community groups) 6 Other business Action 6.1 Another meeting is required to complete the course outcomes and Skills/Knowledge profile. Another 2hr session in 3 weeks time was proposed. CMM to confirm time/venue 7 Next meeting Action 7.1 To discuss and undertake further work on Skills/Knowledge Profile meeting Monday 19 July – 10:30am-12:30pm Verve boardroom, Level 2, 10-16 Queen St, Melbourne N/A 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 47 Appendix 5 - Project Steering Committee minutes Certificate IV in Theatre Arts (21679VIC) Diploma of Theatre Arts (21680VIC) Re-accreditation Project Steering Committee (PSC) Minutes Meeting 1 held at Verve-Knowledge and Skills Level 2, 10-16 Queen St, Melbourne Monday 19 July 2010: 10.30am – 12.30pm Present Organisation/Profession Email Brett Adam (BA) Theatre Director brettadam@hotmail.com Greg Dyson (GD) Victoria University greg.dyson@vu.edu.au Ben Rogan (BR) Theatre Artist theweaningroom@hotmail.com Mark Wager (MW) Theatre Design mhwpgs@ocean.com.au John Butler (JB) Swinburne Uni of Tech - TAFE jbutler@swin.edu.au Julia Davis (JDa) Dream Puppets dreampuppets@netspace.net.au Tracey Flanigan (TF) Merry Go Round Theatre tracey.flanigan@bigpond.com Kim Olsen (KO) Physical Theatre Association kimkaos@gmail.com Ros Mackay (RM) Acting & Business Practice knockabout_theatre@hotmail.co m Jessica Smithett (JS) Production/Stage Management jsmithett@hotmail.com Genevieve Wearne (GW) CEO - Verve genevieve@verve.org.au John Dunton (JD) Curriculum Maintenance Manager (CMM) – Human Services, Arts, Design & Entertainment, Sport & Recreation, Museum, Library & Information Services jdunton@swin.edu.au Autumn Howell (AH) CMM – Human Services Administrator (Minutes) ashowell@swin.edu.au David Trembath (DT) Curriculum Writer & Accreditation Advisor davetrem@ozemail.com.au Apologies In attendance 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 48 Appendix 5 - Project Steering Committee minutes 1 Welcome & Apologies Action 1.1 Project Steering Committee (PSC) members were welcomed and apologies were noted for the 2nd meeting for the re-accreditation of 21679VIC Certificate IV in Theatre Arts & 21680VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts. N/A 1.2 The minutes of the previous meeting (28/06/10) were accepted as accurate by the PSC. N/A 2 Business Arising Action 2.1 This meeting was scheduled as a continuation of the first PSC meeting to finalise the Skills Knowledge Profile of Certificate IV and Diploma of Theatre Arts courses. It was noted that a large number of PSC members were not present and all suggestions would need to be ratified by the full PSC. N/A 2.2 It was recommended that feedback on the current course structures is sought from approximately 5 former students (in addition to those on the PSC) N/A 2.3 First Aid unit in Cert IV was discussed at the 1st PSC meeting (Minutes item 5.4) - The issue of retaining first aid as a core unit was raised again. Currently the first aid unit is a pre-requisite for the Diploma as the Cert IV is embedded in the Diploma qualification. The issue of entry pre-requisites will need to be revised to ensure that the courses are not seen as nested. GD felt that to retain First Aid as a core unit it needed to be applicable to the outcomes of both the Certificate IV and the Diploma courses. In addition, many who come to VU for RPL only require gap training in the first aid unit – they have been practising in industry without a first aid certificate. o Suggestion: remove from core and place as an elective in the physical theatre stream with the electrical units. Due to the limited number of PSC present this will go out to all PSC members to vote. All PSC members to vote. 3 Development of Skills Knowledge Profile for the Diploma Action 3.1 It was again noted that the Certificate IV and the Diploma need to clearly demonstrate a difference in vocational outcome as nested courses were no longer permitted. Working from the Executive Summary for the current Diploma the PSC identified the following course outcomes for Diploma level students: Develop advanced performance skills Refine performance skills o DT to review content to distinguish any overlaps N/A Research and evaluate theatrical reference to inform industry practice o The title of this outcome (and its unit) is confusing. DT to investigate other units which could be included to address working in industry and the history of the industry. Eg: ‘conduct research’ and ‘work in the creative arts industry’ Develop technical production skills o Replace with updated units from the new Training Packages Develop business management skills relating to organisational characteristics, the operations and productions of small companies and small theatre 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 49 Appendix 5 - Project Steering Committee minutes o Replace with updated units from the new Training Package Conduct rehearsals through to performance of full production for audiences o This outcome refers to units VBP666 & VBP667. There are performance based units in the upcoming Dance/Performing Arts Training Package. These draft units to be compared to VBP666 & VBP667 and reviewed for their suitability for potential inclusion in this course once the Training Package is endorsed Stage Manage a production for theatre, festival or event o To be re-worded – a student does not necessarily need to have stage managed an event to be awarded the Diploma o Possible units -CUETEM01C Co-ordinate production operations & CURTEM03C Establish and manage production requirements and resources + compulsory First Aid unit (HLTFA301B) 3.2 Missing outcomes A unit relating to ‘digital media for theatre performance’ was identified as being needed o DT to look at the upcoming Dance/Performing Arts Training Package to see what may be available 3.3 GD suggested changing the course rules so that it is not obligatory to select one unit from each of the three areas within the Technical Production stream (Sound, Audio & Set Construction). This way the course is more open and not ‘one size fits all’.* *(amendment to text as per minute item 1.3 from meeting on 13/09/10 ) MW voiced an objection to this and advocated retaining the current course structure as completing units from each ‘stream’ gives students an understanding of the different functions required for a theatre performance and an appreciation of the perspective of those who work exclusively in those functions. BA felt that under the current structure some people are being taught things they will never use again such as using a lighting board. There was general agreement that : o Students should be taught the basic understanding and theories of light and lighting for performance without getting too technical o Spatial design and stage craft skills currently incorporated into Certificate IV should be retained. JD outlined the structure of Allied Health qualification which has ‘specialisation streams’ as well as a ‘generic stream’ in the Diploma and suggested the solution could be a structure similar to this. DT stated that he can write a broad unit for performance-oriented students to learn about lighting, audio, sets, stage compositions if the PSC felt this was a possible option. There are a number of existing units which could inform this such as CUVDSP15 Research and apply techniques for application to spatial design. The unit could be adapted by adding the elements: ‘manipulate elements of theatre’ and ‘creating a work’. Due to limited number of PSC present, this will go out to all PSC members to consider 3.4 N/A DT encouraged the PSC to consider the inclusion of CUFIND401A Provide 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 All PSC members to give their views. All other pre-requisites to be removed. The question of nominal hours of the course and units will be determined when the course structure is finalised. Assessment strategies need review as current requirements are difficult to put into practice. Suggested that at Certificate IV level a student needs to participate in two live performances. At Diploma level the student should complete more complex performances. N/A N/A 5 Other business Action 5.1 Each PSC member was requested to compile a list of suggested industry contacts for consultation – to be emailed to CMM (cmmhs@swin.edu.au) by Friday 13 August 2010 identifying: name, speciality, contact details. This list will be compiled and brought to the next meeting for review. PSC to email proposed contacts to CMM 5.2 PSC to provide feedback on minutes items 2.3, 3.3, 4.3 and 4.6 to David Trembath (davetrem@ozemail.com.au) by Friday 13 August 2010. Following the feedback DT will put together a draft course document that will be circulated to the PSC for consideration at the next meeting. PSC to provide feedback to DT 6 Next meeting Action 6.1 The next meeting has been scheduled Monday 13th September 2010 – 10:00am-12:00pm Verve Boardroom, Level 2, 10-16 Queen Street, Melbourne N/A 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 52 Appendix 5 - Project Steering Committee minutes Certificate IV in Theatre Arts (21679VIC) Diploma of Theatre Arts (21680VIC) Re-accreditation Project Steering Committee (PSC) Minutes Meeting 3 held at Verve-Knowledge and Skills Level 2, 10-16 Queen St, Melbourne Monday 13 September 2010: 10am – 12pm Present Organisation/Profession Email Jessica Smithett (JS) Production/Stage Management jsmithett@hotmail.com Greg Dyson (GD) Victoria University greg.dyson@vu.edu.au Mark Wager (MW) Theatre Design mhwpgs@ocean.com.au John Butler (JB) Swinburne Uni of Tech - TAFE jbutler@swin.edu.au Julia Davis (JDAV) Dream Puppets dreampuppets@netspace.net.au Tracey Flanigan (TF) Merry Go Round Theatre tracey.flanigan@bigpond.com Jill Mitchell (JM) Project Manager - Verve jill.mitchell@verve.org.au Brett Adam (BA) Theatre Director brettadam@hotmail.com Ben Rogan (BR) Theatre Artist theweaningroom@hotmail.com Kim Olsen (KO) Physical Theatre Association kimkaos@gmail.com Ros Mackay (RM) Acting & Business Practice knockabout_theatre@hotmail.co m Genevieve Wearne (GW) CEO - Verve genevieve@verve.org.au John Dunton (JD) Curriculum Maintenance Manager (CMM) – Human Services, Arts, Design & Entertainment, Sport & Recreation, Museum, Library & Information Services jdunton@swin.edu.au Autumn Howell (AH) CMM – Human Services Administrator (Minutes) ashowell@swin.edu.au David Trembath (DT) Curriculum Writer & Accreditation Advisor davetrem@ozemail.com.au Apologies In attendance 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 53 Appendix 5 - Project Steering Committee minutes 1 Welcome & Apologies Action 1.1 Project Steering Committee (PSC) members were welcomed and apologies were noted for the 3rd meeting for the re-accreditation of 21679VIC Certificate IV in Theatre Arts & 21680VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts. N/A 1.2 JB accepted to role Chair for this PSC meeting in the absence of BA. N/A 1.3 The minutes of the previous meeting (19/07/10) accepted as accurate by GD & MW pending the amendment of GD’s comment in point 3.3 to read: “GD suggested changing the course rules so that it is not obligatory to select one unit from each of the three areas within the Technical Production stream (Sound, Audio & Set Construction). This way the course is more open and not ‘one size fits all’.” AH to amend minutes 2 Business Arising Action 2.1 Outcomes of items circulated to PSC for comment and vote: N/A 2.2 Strong industry support to retain First Aid in core DT states strong Curriculum support for keeping a broad unit selection at Cert IV. DT outlines changes that will be made to the curriculum document: A lot of the pre-requisite units have been changed to co-requisites. Curriculum documents currently states units can be selected “from relevant Training Packages” - Phrase to be reworded to be more specific. “CUFIND401A – Provide services on a freelance basis” added to the Diploma as a Core unit. DT suggests adding this unit to the Certificate IV as well. The Cert IV was embedded in the Diploma - this is no longer allowed. To be rewritten to differentiate between the Certificate IV and the Diploma and their outcomes. Entry requirements to be rewritten so the Certificate IV is no a requirement for entry into the Diploma N/A 2.3 GD sent a revised course structure to DT & JD on 10/09/10. To be reviewed by PSC. 3 Draft Course Structure Action 3.1 DT advises that the Credit Matrix has been introduced since these courses were originally written. N/A The Certificate IV should be primarily made up of Level 4 units & the Diploma should primarily be made up of Level 5 units. 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 54 Appendix 5 - Project Steering Committee minutes 3.2 Certificate IV Draft Course Structure N/A The units with a Credit Matrix Level lower than Level 4 (thus lowering the average level across the qualification) have been highlighted. PSC to decide which ones they would like to remove/replace. JM points out that there may be desirable units in the new Live Performance Training Package CUA10. o For example; CUAIND301A Work effectively in the creative arts industry (Level 3) could replace CUEIND01C (Level 2). o List of units to be in CUA10 to be circulated to PSC by JM PSC decide the following: o To research for higher level units: CUESOU7B, CUFLGT101A, CUEAUD06B, CUEPRP03B, CUESCE05B & CUESTA05C o To remove: MEM18001C & CUECOR02C o To replace: CUEIND01C with CUAIND301A o To research equivalent unit in BSB07: CUEFIN02C & CUEMAR03C Entry Requirements: Australian Core Skills Framework Level 3 The current course lists “positive team-working skills” – DT queries the ability to assess this. o PSC opt to change phrase to “Can demonstrate ability to work collaboratively” Course Descriptor: 3.3 More job titles/roles suggested in GD’s revised course structure. Diploma Draft Course Structure N/A The units with a Credit Matrix Level lower than Level 5 (thus lowering the average level) have been highlighted. PSC to decide which ones they would like to remove/replace. PSC decide the following: o To research for higher level units: CUESTA01A, CUETGE15B & CUEFLGT301A o To remove: CUEFOH07B & and research potential general financial units from Dip Project Management o To replace: CUVADM11B & CUVADM12B with CUAIND301A JB recommends the nominal hours for ‘VU067 Rehearse the Show’ and ‘VU089 Perform the show’ are reviewed as he feel that 100hrs each is not enough for what students are expected to do at a Diploma level. Suggests 150hr each would be more appropriate GD suggests changing the title form ‘rehearse the show’ and ‘perform the show’ to ‘generate the content’ and ‘rehearse the content’. 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 55 Appendix 5 - Project Steering Committee minutes Entry Requirements: PSC confirm entry requirements are appropriate. Course Descriptor: More job titles/roles suggested in GD’s revised course structure. 4 Revised course structure tabled by GD Action 4.1 Documents circulated to PSC N/A GD states that it has been broadened to make appropriate for projects in community, RPL and in-class delivery. The core consists of those units common to each Theatre Arts worker and is based on the idea that you have to create a work. The electives are grouped under new headings. DT highlights that to make a radical change to the course structure, there has to be industry validation. The Accreditation Advisors Panel will ask to see evidence of this. o In addition, Skills Victoria would need to accept the argument that the new structure would get people into paid work. JS feels it would be harder to deliver with the broad range of electives to choose from. o DT suggests could present the excess units as an appendix – ‘Training Package units that could be included’ – and have a reduced course structure. o 4.2 GD included the ‘digital image content’ unit in response to Skills Victoria brief about using technology 4.3 N/A PSC highlights that there are a few units which can be contextualised for puppetry; eg. “prop making” and “preform the show” DT highlights that the more you reduce the core, the less constant the quality of the course will be. N/A JS states that digital imagery has been used in almost every show she has worked on in the last 2 years. It has been something she has been asked to do – but not known how. Feels it is important to include in the course something on working with, and generating, digital content. JDAV would like to highlight that many other areas (dance, opera, etc) are increasingly using puppetry – feels that a basic knowledge of puppetry should be incorporated into theatre work. 4.4 JB expresses his support for an appendix N/A JD recommends 5 core units in the Cert IV and suggests putting back into the core of GD’s course structure: ‘Research and analyse history and theory’, ‘Source and apply entertainment industry knowledge’, ‘OH&S’ and ‘First aid’. o PSC agree that while you do not have to have a First Aid certificate to practice theatre, it greatly aids in employment opportunities. 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 56 Appendix 5 - Project Steering Committee minutes DT suggests for the core of both the Cert IV & Diploma: “Provide services on a freelance basis” – knowing pay rates, insurance, etc. To give the graduate extra employability. o GD does not feel that this unit reflects a Cert IV level – therefore it should not be a core o TF states that when studying this course they touched upon this topic – she has since used every bit it. o PSC to look at the unit in further depth and provide feedback. 4.4 GD states that the goal with the restructure was to create a course that would allow for areas of specialisation. N/A MW feels that the attractiveness of the current course structure is that it is so broad and multifaceted. o JS concurs with this. DT states that from an Accreditation point of view, a Cert IV is about breadth and in a Diploma you can specialise 4.5 GD highlights that what is missing from the current course structure is the generation of material/content. N/A 5 Other business Action 5.1 DT to create a composite of both course documents and circulate. PSC to provide feedback 5.2 PSC to review and feedback to (davetrem@ozemail.com.au) by Wednesday 29 September Two letters of support need to be sought from industry representatives who were not members of the PSC. N/A 1.2 JB accepted the role of Chair for this PSC meeting N/A 1.3 The minutes of the previous meeting (13/09/10) were accepted as accurate N/A Moved: MW Seconded: JM 2 PSC Feedback Register & Final Review of Draft Course Submission Action 2.1 DT compiled and circulated document of feedback received from PSC since 13/09/10 meeting. N/A 2.2 Seven respondents – some detailed comments received as listed. Refer to 2.2 for further details. Certificate IV Feedback N/A Course outcomes: Suggestion: delete “deputy stage manager” – PSC opt to leave as “assistant stage manager” Course Structure: Included for consideration: CUSSOU303A Set up and disassemble audio equipment and CUELGT05C Record and operate standard lighting cues – PSC opt to include. Feedback requested the alternative of “Set Creation” (instead of “Set Construction) to list of technical units as it is a broader term Feedback requested the addition of a “Scriptwriting” unit. o DT Suggested CUFWRT601A Write scripts and notes that as this unit is at AQF level 6 (Advanced Diploma) –students would need to be advised of the complexity of the unit before undertaking it and teachers would need to maintain the rigour of assessment. o PSC agreed to include CUFWRT601A as an elective unit Certificate IV - Technical Units which were noted in one feedback register as points of concern: CUESOU11B Set up and operate stage monitor systems o Objection - too complex - intended for high level audio technicians, large rock and roll acts or major events o Comment - unit descriptor is very broadly written and specifies only ‘live productions’, has no pre-requisites and very broad underpinning knowledge o PSC chose to keep in electives 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 59 Appendix 5 - Project Steering Committee minutes 2.3 CUFLGT401A Implement lighting designs o Objection - specifies filmed events o Comment - delivery could be open to interpretation. The unit refers to live production in the Range Statement o PSC chose to keep in electives CUSSOU406A Record sound on location o Objection - specifies film production o Comment - not suitable, delete o PSC agreed to delete CUSSOU405A Mix recorded music o Objection - Intended for sound engineers o Comment - not suitable, delete. o PSC agreed to delete CUEAUD02C Prepare, rig, test and modify vision systems o Objection - resource issues particularly at Swinburne o Comment - unit specifically states: Vision systems used will be determined by the equipment used within an organisation o PSC chose to keep in electives CUFLGT402A Set up, record and operate lighting cues and effects o Objection - too simple (30hr) o Comment - unit specifically states productions include live stage productions and range statement covers a wide range of lighting desks or consoles o PSC chose to keep in electives and also add to electives: CUELGT06C Set up, record and operate lighting cues and effects, which is 100hrs. CUESOU13B Specify, install and operate audio for an outdoor event o Objection - “difficult to get your head around for someone with no real sound training” o Comment - not sufficient reason to delete but will require advice to students before undertaking as per the scriptwriting unit. o PSC chose to keep in electives Diploma Feedback N/A Course outcomes: Include “It should be noted that attainment of the Diploma of Theatre Arts may also be a component of the development of oneself as a performer or artist” Delete “ producer” as not appropriate for a Diploma level Add “production manager” 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 60 Appendix 5 - Project Steering Committee minutes PSC agreed on recommended changes. 2.4 Draft Course Submission for Certificate IV and Diploma to be amended in line with the above agreed changes. ADMIN®REDSTITCH .NET Dr. John Butler Co-ordinator, Diploma of Theatre Arts Department of Arts- Prahran Campus Swinburne University,University 4 N ovember, 2011 Dear John, The following is a letter of support in relation to the new units in the Certificate IV and Diploma of Theatre Arts at Swinburne University ofTechnology TAFE. As an industry partner, Red Stitch has enjoyed a mutually beneficial collaboration with Swinburne University spanning several years. This has predominantly involved: • • • • industry placements for undergraduates of your Theatre courses at Red Stitch Actors Theatre the professional engagement of other Swinburne graduates as guest workers at Red Stitch particularly stage managers and operators,FOH managers and creatives the dedicated Graduate Program pathway whereby a candidate is selected for a one year internship at Red Stitch as an Ensemble member with full entitlements and responsibilities the inclusion in our permanent Red Stitch Ensemble of graduates from Swinburne's theatre arts courses. Red Stitch have read and reviewed the new units in the Certificate IV and Diploma of Theatre Arts as per the submission. We are in agreement with t he structure of the proposed core and elective units, and believer the vocational and educationalpathways to be consistent with the course aims. There is a dearth of multi skilled workers within the theatre sector and Swinburne produces graduates who have the requisite training to meet this need, which is precisely why we are so deeply invested in extending our alliance. Sincerely, C 7Vt"" SonSuares GeneralManager Red Stitch Actors Theatre Letter of Support 1 Red Stitch 22184VIC Diploma of Theatre Arts Version 1 G>J G s)::.. ,.,, 77
