Intro To Business Class Syllabus 2012/2013 Teacher: Eric Allan allaneric@greenlocalschools.org Course Overview: Intro To Business introduces students to the concepts and skills required for success in today’s workplace. Students will be provided with an abundance of practical applications that connect students to the real business world. Extensive coverage of finance, marketing, production and management allows students to explore the foundations of business operations. Topics such as ethics, economics, career planning, and technology will take students beyond the basics. Unit 1 – Business in the Global Economic Environment Unit 2 – Business Organization and Management Unit 3 – Business Operations and Technology Unit 4 – Personal Financial Mangagement Grading Policy: At Green High School, grades are calculated in all classes based on the 80/20 Policy. As a result, a student’s grade is divided into 2 categories: Academic Achievement and Academic Practice. After a student has had sufficient instruction and practice on a topic, it is then reasonable to judge his/her mastery of the information or skills in the form of academic achievement assessments. The purpose is to evaluate how well a student has learned the material. Eighty percent of the total course grade comes from academic achievement and will consist of tests (oral, written and performance), some quizzes, some homework, writings, projects or presentations. Whenever a student learns new material he or she goes through a time of wrestling with the material before eventually mastering the information or skills. It is expected that a student will make some mistakes during this learning process. Work completed during this learning period is considered academic practice. Twenty percent of the total course grade comes from academic practice and will consist of some quizzes, homework, first drafts of writing, teacher questions during instruction, some worksheets, informal observations or pre-testing. Classroom Expectations: Student Expectations: You are expected to be prepared, on-time, and have a positive attitude. This means the following: In your seat and ready when the late bell rings. If you are late have a pass. Have something to write with and write on. You need to take notes. Treat all classroom items with respect. It is not your property. Treat all students and teachers with respect. Be awake and be positive. This class is designed to be fun and it will only be fun if you make it that way. In all instances we will look to the GHS handbook for all rules. Electronic Device Policy: “Green Local Schools will now allow students to use their electronic devices in an educational setting at the discretion of each individual teacher. While devices are being allowed at all buildings, the guidelines for use at each building will vary. “ As you are all aware of you will be allowed to bring and use personal electronic devices (i.e.: cell phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) in school during the upcoming year. This is a test year to determine how well you can handle the responsibility of proper technology use. You will allowed free use of cell phones in hallways and the commons, but once you enter a classroom, each teacher has the right to set their own BYOD threshold. My policy will be as follows: Students will be allowed to have and use electronic devices during class when we are working on classwork/homework in class. During lecture/notes time, all students will put away their personal device and turned to silent mode. It should be noted that texting/phone calls during any class time is not permitted. Your device is there as a music player or to access the internet if necessary for class related information. During assessments, devices must be turned to silent mode and placed securely in a pocket, purse, or backpack. They will not be allowed out during testing time. There will be absolutely no tweeting, or updating your facebook status. If these rules are broken, I will give an office referral. If you are unsure if you are allowed to access your device please ask me first. If at any time you need clarification, please ask and I will gladly go over this with you. Re-Testing Policy: All students will be able to retest once per nine weeks. So you will need to choose wisely. You will have to declare your intentions of re-testing within two days of when the graded test or quiz is passed back. You will have to complete a review assignment over the material on the test. Then you will have to make up the test during your own time (lunch, intervention (if applicable), or academic intervention). The grade on the second test will be the one that is counted. Green Local Schools Grading Scale Letter Grade Percentage Range College Prep Quality Points Advanced (“A”) Quality Points A+ A AB+ B BC+ C CD+ D DF 98-100 93-97 90-92 87-89 83-86 80-82 77-79 73-76 70-72 67-69 63-66 60-62 Failing 4.33 4.00 3.67 3.33 3.00 2.67 2.33 2.00 1.67 1.33 1.00 .67 0 4.83 4.50 4.17 3.83 3.50 3.17 2.83 2.50 2.17 1.33 1.00 .67 0 Advanced Placement Quality Points 5.33 5.00 4.67 4.33 4.00 3.67 3.33 3.00 2.67 1.33 1.00 .67 0 Final Grade Determination: In a blocked and/or semester class, a final course grade will be determined by multiplying the nine (9) week averages by two (2) and adding the final exam grade. This final will then be divided by five (5)to determine the class average. For Example: 1st 9 weeks grade: 78%(C+) X 2 =156 2nd 9 weeks grade: 88%(B+) X 2= 176 Final Exam grade 71%(C-) X 1+ 71 Total= 403 divided by 5 = 80.6 (rounded) = 81%= B In a year long period class, a final course grade will be determined by multiplying the nine (9) week averages by two (2) and adding the mid-term grade and the final exam grade. This number is then divided by ten (10) to determine the year average. Questions: I encourage students and parents to be in contact with me regularly.
