Homework
• Homework is an important part of fifth grade learning and
success! Homework is extra practice and should reflect the
day’s work.
• If your child is spending more than an hour each night (not
counting independent reading), come and talk to me and/or
leave a short note explaining the struggle
 Students should read every night at least Monday through
Thursday for 30 minutes. They should record the book and
pages read on their Planning Sheet.
 Expect to find one page (double sided) of Math homework
each night Monday-Thursday from the day’s lesson. There
will also be All the Right Type, practicing math facts, or
studying spelling words assigned nightly.
 Once a week your child will be expected to make an entry
into his/her Reading Response Journal. There may also be
writing homework for students who need to finish
assignments not completed in class.
Late/Missing Work
• Students who do not bring back their
homework will need to stay in during recess
to finish it.
• If your child has excessive missing work, I
will send an e-mail or note home. Students
will be expected to complete and return
work promptly.
• Students are expected to complete
homework assignments for days they are at
school. If a child is sick, s/he does not have
to do homework for the days s/he wasn’t
present.
Doing the Math of Independent Reading
•20 minutes per day at school = 80 pages per week
•30 minutes per day at home = 120 pages per week
•200 pages per week = 800 pages per month
•800 pages per month = 5 books per month
(Based on an average novel length of 160 pages)
•5 books per month = 25 books per semester
Grading
See the handout for
grading and classroom
expectations.
More Grading Details…
• Math Unit Tests – There will be a pre- and
posttest for each large unit. I will staple the
pretest to the back of the posttest so you can
compare.
• Spelling – There are 13 weekly words, plus
two randomly pulled from prior lists (15
words in all). There will also be a secret bonus
word that can help, but not harm a student’s
score.
Mail
• Sent home on Fridays.
• I will try to let you know what assessments
are coming.
• Please don’t put anything into mailboxes
without asking me first.
• No birthday party invitations to be passed out
at school unless whole class is invited.
Communication
• Look for: Fifth Grade Up-Dates in your email, and check your
child’s “Boomerang Folder” for homework, corrected
assessments and class work, as well as fliers from the school.
•
I can be reached via e-mail, and telephone (before and after
school), and would be happy to set up conferences as needed.

• Progress Reports (Report Cards) come home twice in a
school year. If you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate
to call or e-mail and I would be happy to provide you with
information necessary to help your child be successful in fifth
grade.

math timings, and important handouts in the

SBA
Smarter Balanced Assessment
This is the year your student will take the SBA
English Langue Arts and Math, and the MSP
(Measurement of Student Progress) in Science.
I will provide practice opportunities and focus
on test taking strategies as a genre.
I try to keep this time as stress free as possible
while preparing students to do their best
work and show what they have learned.
