Annapolis High School International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme 2013-2014 Semester 2 Course Syllabus AP B- PHYSICS Teacher: E-mail: Shalini Bhalla Sbhalla@aacps.org Phone: 410-266-5240 Planning periods: 1A and 4B Course Description Are you ready for some Physics, college style? AP Physics B is the equivalent of an introductory, algebra-based physics course offered in the first year at university. It is rigorous and fast-paced, most often intended to cover the conceptual understanding and skills requisite for science, though not generally physics, majors. AP Physics B is offered to students who have successfully completed a first year physics course in high school, and mathematics through geometry and two years of algebra. The emphasis of this course is three-fold: developing a conceptual understanding of key ideas in physics, practice in the use of mathematical skills towards the solution of real-world problems, and application of both concepts and skills to complex, novel, and often interdisciplinary, challenges. Materials Text: College Physics, AP Edition 2012, Serway and Vuille Supplementary text: Fast Track to a 5, Preparing for the AP Physics B Examination, Pascuzzi, Zober and Zober Basic Supplies: 3-ring binder Loose-leaf paper Graphing Calculator Writing tools (pen, pencil) Course Outline A more complete version of topics covered and probable laboratory investigations is posted on the school website under the heading Course Audit: Syllabus for AP B Physics (the detailed description submitted to and approved by the AP College Board). Typically, and to ensure preparedness for the AP exam, Units 1-5 are completed in the first semester, with Units 6 – 8 and exam practice in the spring semester. **Here is a link to the course description found on the College Board website http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/public/repository/ap-physics-course-description.pdf AP score qualification 5-Extermely well qualified-College Credit granted at all institutions accepting AP scores- 3college cedits or more. 4-Well qualified-College Credit granted at all institutions aaccepting AP scores-3college credits/rarely more. 3- Qulified-College Credit granted at MOST institutions accepting AP scores-up to 3 college credits 2-Possibly qualified-College credits rarely granted at institutions accepting AP scores-up to 3 college credits. 1-No recommendation-College Credit not granted. Grading Policy/Methods of Evaluation Grades will be calculated according to the following scheme: 10% 20% 70% Homework/classwork Labs and Projects Quizzes, Unit tests and Performance assessments (Designated critical labs/components of corresponding lab reports) Environment Human Ingenuity Health and social eduction Evvironments Annapolis High School International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme 2013-2014 Semester 2 Course Syllabus AP B- PHYSICS It is the expectation that all graded assignments/assessments will be returned within one week, with the exception of lab reports, which may require up to two weeks in order to provide thorough evaluation and feedback. Make-up work: Routine homework assignments and additional support will also be given and monitored on-line through WebAssign software. Students are expected to see the teacher the day following an absence (even if the student does not have physics class that day) to help ensure that students are as prepared as possible when returning to class after an absence. Students have as many days to make up work missed as they were absent. Communication of Grades: Most assignments are graded and returned within one week. Updated grade sheets are given to students about every two weeks. Lengthy assignments such as lab reports or papers may require more than one week to grade, offer feedback, and return. Academic Integrity In order to promote the pursuit of academic excellence and learning, Anne Arundel County Public Schools expects its students to conform to specific standards of academic integrity. Academic integrity is an integral part of promoting self-respect, trust, student achievement, and positive relationships among all stakeholders in our school community. Academic integrity means exhibiting honesty in all academic exercises and assignments. Academic dishonesty refers to any form of misconduct that occurs in relation to all formal academic exercises. Behavioral Expectations Annapolis High School students, staff, and visitors will make a pledge and commitment to their school and its mission.
