CASEY STANGL Casey Stangl was recently selected to participate in American Film Institute’s 2007 Directing Workshop for Women. This prestigious program was designed “to provide talented women who have established themselves within film, television or theatre with the opportunity to direct a narrative project.” In June Casey will direct From Here, a quirky romantic comedy. Casey is an award-winning director of theatre and opera. She served a twelveyear tenure as Artistic Director of Eye of the Storm Theatre in Minneapolis, a company she co-founded to develop and produce new plays and bring nationally prominent new work to Twin Cities’ audiences. Casey was named Artist of the Year by the Minneapolis Star Tribune and Best Director by City Pages’ “Best of the Twin Cities” and Lavender Magazine. Since moving to Los Angeles in 2005 Casey has directed the American premiere of Darwin in Malibu and Barbra’s Wedding for Garry Marshall’s Falcon Theatre. Casey has also directed new play workshops for South Coast Repertory, Pasadena Playhouse, Pacific Resident Theatre, Ensemble Studio Theatre and the NYU Collective. For television Casey has shadowed Alan Ball on the final episode of Six Feet Under, Peter Horton on Grey’s Anatomy, Will Mackenzie on two episodes of Reba, and Gail Mancuso on Scrubs. Other recent work includes: Pygmalion, Blue/Orange and Top Girls for the Guthrie Theater; The Ladies of the Camellias for Denver Center Theatre Company; The Winter’s Tale for Alabama Shakespeare Festival; My Way for Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, The Drawer Boy and Fully Committed for the Jungle Theater, which transferred to the Pantages Theatre for a commercial run; and Untold Crimes of Insomniacs, a world premiere produced by the Guthrie as part of their BFA program with the University of Minnesota. Casey’s work has been seen across the country at HERE in New York, Woolly Mammoth in Washington D.C., Bailiwick Art Center in Chicago and The Lab in San Francisco. Casey’s opera credits include: Dialogues of the Carmelites for Fort Worth Opera; Il Viaggio a Reims for Music Academy of the West and Portland Opera (in Portland Ms. Stangl co-directed with Christopher Mattalliano); Rigoletto and Norma for Minnesota Opera Company; Die Fledermaus for Pine Mountain Music Festival in Michigan; Cosi Fan Tutte, Hansel and Gretel and Amahl and the Night Visitors for Opera Omaha; The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein for Northstar Opera; and assistant director for Frank Corsaro's production of The Marriage of Figaro at Juilliard Opera Center in New York.
