Ch. 5 “Growth in the West” VIRTUAL SCRAPBOOK PROJECT Name: ____________ Per #: ____ Overview: Just like settlers from the past kept scrapbooks, diaries, etc. to help document their “adventures” during this time frame, YOU will also be keeping a “virtual” scrapbook to document your “character’s” adventures and responses to various topics of this unit. It will include: A) JOURNAL ENTRIES (2 paragraphs each – 4-5 sentences per paragraph) 1) Journal Entry #1: Your “nameplate” introduction/journal entry 2) Journal Entry #2: Your character’s response to the Gold Rush/Mining Boom 3) Journal Entry #3: Your character’s response to the Cattle Drives/Cow Towns, etc 4) Journal Entry #4: Your character’s response to the Transcontiental RR 5) Journal Entry #5: Your character’s response to the Homestead Act 6) Journal Entry #6: Your character’s response to the Native American Conflicts/Battles - ideas: Battle of Little Bighorn, Sand Creek Massacre, Wounded Knee Massacre, etc 7) Journal Entry #7: Your character’s response to the overall situation now that it’s over - this is a final summary of the overall feelings, etc. about all the events as a whole B) PICTURES: 1) Each journal entry should have at least 3 pictures that fit the topic of the journal 2) Each picture should have a caption that explains what the picture is showing C) MUSIC: 1) Each journal entry should have a song that plays as “background music” for that journal - the music style and substance should fit the topic and the “feel” of the journal - example: if your journal is sad, don’t have sounding music Grading Your virtual scrapbook will be graded on its overall quality of work. Things that show “quality work” for this project are: Quality Work (10 pts) 1) neat, colorful, organized, polished, and “professional” design - fills page well, eye-catching, final draft type quality 2) all requirements fulfilled (See above) - do you have all 7 journals? - do you have 3 pics for each? - do you have music for each? 3) finished on time Information (10 pts) 1) accurate, appropriate & adequate (is there enough?) information in the journals - journals are personal, yet explain and show an understanding of the topic Writing Quality (10 pts) 2) good writing quality, including: - complete sentences - correct grammar - correct punctuation - correct spelling - correct use of capital letters - good fluency/flow/organization - a “voice” for the journal that fits the character, the topic, and the “feel” for each page/entry - it should show emotion, personality, etc
