THEATRE JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT REASON In theatre we, on a regular basis, take words that someone else has written, try figure out what they mean, and determine how to bring them to life. Writing about a quotation is practice for this sort of interpretation. We also must look inside ourselves and at the world around us for inspiration. Answering insightful questions help to train our minds to look for that inspiration. Theatre is life...therefore, many other educational subject areas are a part of the theatrical experience. ASSIGNMENT Each day when you come to class there will be a quotation, question, or statement on the board. Your assignment is to write a full paragraph about it—this means a minimum of 5 complete sentences. You do not have to agree with the quotation or statement. In fact, it is helpful if you say why you agree or disagree. FREE WRITES Occasionally you will have a free write journal assignment. This means that you may write about anything you choose as long as you do not use curse words and you refrain from saying anything unkind about anyone. People’s names should never be used in journals. Suggested topics will usually be provided, but you will not be limited to those topics. GRADING Journals are graded by volume on a weekly basis. Each journal entry is worth 20 pts. You earn those points based on how many complete sentences you have per journal entry. . 0 – 3 sentences = 0-15 pts. 4 – 5 sentences = 16-20 pts. 6+ sentences for the majority of the week = random bonus opportunity Journals will be graded outside of school hours every week. If a student’s journal is not in their class folder, it will be counted as late. Students are not responsible for journals missed during an absence, therefore do not have to make them up before the grading date.
