MINUTES JAM (Joints and Mobility) Faculty Advisor: Dr. Kevin Deluzio Friday, May 30, 2008 10:30am – 12:30pm Location: HMRC Innovation Lab Chair: Heather (1) Article Selection: Scott Snacks: Nicole Drinks: Simon In Attendance: Dr. K. Deluzio, H. Linley, S. Jones, M. Restorick, S. Smith, R. Li, N. Badke, J. Irwandi. 1. Round Table Discussion: Research Developments (45 min) Miranda - Shastri presentation completed. Trying to get a question on wheelchair necessity on a survey being distributed in India at the end of this month. Questioned about literature review – when to begin writing it, and how in depth to write while still reading – suggested to summarize along the way, possibly using built in tool in PubMed to keep track of keywords and articles read. Simon - Has been reading and programming. Continues to look into getting CT or MR images (possibly from Manuella). Looking into getting some bones from anatomy. Nicole - Has been doing work on ApEn and SampEn to help lab mate. Got bike rim and plans to weld next week. Also has been doing some programming. Heather - Continues to work on gait with end in sight. News: Abstract accepted to NACOB as poster presentation. Stacey - Pressure mat works, currently working to synchronize with Fastrack. Conducting a fluoro/OptoTrak comparison. Has spent a lot of time in the lab. Johan - Has been doing DOHM. Has 41 new subjects to complete. Trouble with one subject – the foot marker has been placed on the opposite foot to that which hit the forceplate. Has modified the gimbal CAD model in SolidEdge. Will be doing some machining next week. Rebecca - Has been working on protocol for pressure mat and fluoro data. 2. General Business 2.1 Re: Seminar from this past week (Energy Harvesting, Dr. Li). Please give feedback to Steve Waldman as soon as possible. 2.2 New Members of JAM: It is felt that it should be “hard to get into the club.” Everyone agreed that we feel strongly about keeping the group small for time constraints and comfort level. On the other hand, it is very beneficial having other opinions and ideas (ex. Since Nicole joined us). Suggested that we could introduce one person every couple of months to see how it goes, and scale back if necessary. Decided that for the summer, with the summer students, there are already plenty of members. Considered the possibility of having JAM host a symposium where we invite others, maybe twice during the summer. Members should think about it this week and we will decide next Friday. 2.3 Johan presented the brand new laser pointer. Kevin VERY excited. Kevin requested a second. 2.4 MiniU Review: Three day university experience. Scott, Nicole, Heather and Stacey assisted. Kevin gave lecture. Markered an old guy who didn’t move around very much. Possible summer student job – develop a protocol set up for these demos (markers, programming done, etc.). 2.5 Rebecca India PowerPoint Presentation: Worked for four weeks as medical volunteer. Great pictures, very informative. 2.6 JAM Spring/Summer Adventure: June 20th is cottage day at Heather’s. Heather will look into getting some boating passes so that we can all go to the waterfall at Frontenac Park. Will need two drivers, and at least one more canoe. Map and directions to follow at a later date. 2.7 Pressure Mat Viewing and Help Session: Wanted to put mat in shorts but it bunches giving false pressure readings. Tried a few methods of holding it behind the subject. Constructed a frame to hold it in tension. Gave pressure mat demo, various suggestions from JAM members. 3.
