Information to focus on:
Fertile Crescent:
- large arc of fertile farmland
- people wanted to reside there because of the rich soil
Mesopotamia = “the land between the rivers” – the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers
Writing – began with pictures, recorded on tablets, & was first used to keep business
records
Hammurabi’s Code – first written list of laws
Hammurabi & Nebuchadnezzar – built up Babylon
Some Phoenician Achievements: alphabet, found city of Carthage, and sailed ships for
trade in the Mediterranean
City-state - a city and all the countryside around it; each city-state wanted to have
enough farmland to grow food therefore the city-states fought each other
Irrigation – a way of supplying water
Division of Labor –a type of arrangement where people do different tasks
Canals – human-made waterways; used to irrigate the fields
Chariot – a wheeled, horse-drawn battle car (Hittites & Assyrians)
Social Hierarchy – grouping people by rank or class; depended on their wealth &
occupation
Ziggurat – pyramid shaped temple tower; its height was to honor the gods
Scribes – important people who could read & write
Surplus – more than enough
Geography – the study of the world and the people who live in it, physical features
