Read the information about the Fertile Crescent see if the map you chose
to settle on is where Mesopotamia was located.
The Fertile
Crescent
In a region known
as the Middle East,
there is a strip of rich,
well-watered land
called the Fertile
Crescent. It begins along the eastern shore of the Mediterranean
Sea and the Fertile Crescent arches northward and then curves
down to the Persian Gulf. It is called a crescent because it is
shaped like a quarter moon. It is called fertile because its soil can
be made to produce a good food supply.
People were drawn to a river valley in the heart of the Fertile
Crescent. The Greeks called this river valley Mesopotamia,
meaning, “land between two rivers.” This area became one of the
earliest centers of civilization.
The two rivers that flow across the Mesopotamian plains are
called the Tigris and the Euphrates. The rivers flow so much in
the same south eastern direction that they are often called the
“twin rivers.” They flow into the Persian Gulf.
