At SESS we expect students to
1. Attend school everyday unless too ill to do so
2. Bring the required tools and equipment to class
3. Make an honest effort every class
4. Ask the teacher if there is anything that you do not understand, including meeting with
the teacher after school, if necessary
5. Students are not to take cell phones or music players to class
In addition, for this course it is expected that
6. No food
7. Drinks are allowed but with a lid, such as a water bottle
8. Gum is permitted, but I do not want to see or hear it, but when you are on stage or
being filmed, you need to get rid of the gum.
9. If you have a question, please raise your hand
10. If you are late, please walk into the room quietly
11. Again, no discmen or women, cell phones, cameras, or pagers.
- Learning Outcomes: The most important things that students will be learning
during this course.
1.
To continue a study of the various forms or genres of literature.
2.
To develop each student's ability in both written and oral communication.
3.
To increase one's appreciation of all the aspects of the English language
4.
To develop study skills to help each student in his or her future studies or careers.
5.
To help each student to become a more aware and capable member of society.
During this course students can expect that the following teaching strategies will be
used
1. Cooperation Group Work, 2. Lecture Drill, 3. Socratic Questioning, 4. Group
Investigation
During this course students can expect that the following assessment strategies will
be used.
1. Pencil/Paper Tests, 2. Portfolios, 3. Oral Presentations, 4. Written Assignments, 5.
Research Projects, 6. Self-Evalution/Peer Evaluation
Course Material:
1. Pen and Pencil
2. Binder, paper, and dividers for sections: notes, tests/quizzes, and worksheets
Year Long Plan:
A. Short Stories: Inside Stories 2 (Sept)
- you will be doing quizzes on these stories throughout the unit.
- writing assignments will be assigned with each story.
- you may even be asked to write an essay(s) on one or more of the stories.
B. Literature: Animal Farm, The Chrysalids, I Am the Cheese,
Speak (Oct-Jan)
- there will be daily quizzes on the chapters you had to read.
- writing assignments will be assigned with each novel. Prose Final Test
C. Poetry: Various Poems (Nov)
- there will be daily quizzes on each poem that was assigned for homework. Poetry Final
Test
D. Mid-Term Exam: This exam will test your understanding of poetry and prose. (Nov)
E: Play: Twelve Angry Men( Dec-Jan)
- we will read this play in class ( quizzes, written responses and a project)
F: Grammar, Sentence Structure, and Punctuation (Throughout the year)
G: Creative Writing Assignments, Paragraphs, and Essays (Throughout the year)
H: Provincial Exams: You will be writing two practice Provincial Exams.
I. Speech: Each person in the class will present a two-three minute speech for the class.
Daily Plan:
1. Silent Reading- 10 minutes (4 marks)
2, Journal- 15 minutes (Written Work; marked out of 6, 12 or 24 each day)
3. Main Exercise - 1 hour (Written Work, Quiz, Test, or In-class Work)
Assessment:
Students will be assessed on a combination of the following: organization, completeness
and quality of work in a course notebook, class participation, homework, quizzes, tests,
essays, and individual and group projects.
Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated on individual growth in skills and achievement.
The approximate value of each type of assignment is as follows:
Essays and Writing Assignments ------------------------------50%
Social Responsibility (Attendance, Effort, Attitude, Worksheets)-----------10%
Tests and Quizzes -----------------------------------------------40%
* There will be a final exam at the end of the semester that will count for
20% percent of your overall mark in this course.
Semester’s Marks Breakdown:
1. Term 1.................... 40%
2. Term 2.................... 40%
3. Final Exam.............. 20%
4. Provincial Exam.......20% of the entire semester
Late Assignment Policy
1. Built into each assignment will be criteria for assignments submitted on time.
2. If you hand in the assignment anytime on the due date, not in the particular block in
which English occurs, I will not take off marks. Basically, you have until 3:15 or until I
leave the school to hand in your work.
Teacher Contact:
I will be available every morning from 7:30 to 8:15. Other times can be arranged by
appointment. I am usually in my classroom during lunches (Room 13) I can be reached
