The 4th WEC Gold Medal Colloquium
“Greening Globalization:
Industry and Sustainable Development in the 21st Century"
Thursday and Friday, May 16-17, 2002
Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center
1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20004
AGENDA
Governments and non-governmental organizations are rethinking industry's role in sustainable
development. In particular, the role of foreign direct investment by multinational corporations is being
viewed as critical to growth in the developing world. Concurrently, environmental concerns are
increasingly being reflected in multilateral and bilateral trade agreements, which can affect a company's
ability to operate. This Colloquium will examine the patterns of globalization and how these issues will
affect the ability of business to prosper while at the same time being a positive influence for sustainable
development.
We are pleased to offer a series of presentations on international sustainability management and
corporate environmental stewardship by senior representatives from CEMEX, the 18th WEC Gold Medal
Awardee for International Corporate Environmental Achievement Awardee, as well as from several other
past WEC Gold Medal recipients, including the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies, the 2001 recipient.
CEMEX will feature two projects that defined the company's experience of achieving consistent levels of
growth through geographic diversification in 33 countries while protecting the environment. CEMEX's
sustainable development policy is guided by a philosophy and operational goal the company refers to as En
Armonía con la Naturaleza, a Spanish phrase meaning "In Harmony with Nature."
The WEC Gold Medal is an annual leadership award originated in 1985 to honor a multinational
manufacturing, processing or service company for its outstanding corporate environment, health and safety
(EH&S) and sustainable development innovation, performance and policy. One of the earliest initiatives of
public recognition for industry, it is among the most respected measures of a multinational company's
commitment and capability to maintain uniformly high EH&S standards and promote sustainable
development throughout their worldwide operations.
