Elmer United Methodist Church CHURCH OFFICE AND PETER'S PANTRY - 358-0135 FAX: 856-358-9295 Email: elmerumc@juno.com DAVID REPENNING, PASTOR JULY – AUGUST 2011 others are not in the summer season. Remember some of the things that are happening at this time: Vacation Bible School, summer camp, picnics, missionary visits, vacation, and baseball. This summer we will also be studying the book of Acts during Sunday Morning worship. In Acts 2: 46-47 we have a glimpse of what early Christians did when they were waiting for the Spiritual seasons to change. “Every day they continued to meeting in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.” Greetings, Dear Friends, How is your Sabbath doing? Have you or your life changed because you are now being more observant of keeping the Sabbath? Last month I spoke about Sabbath and summer. We are now a week into the official summer season. We are also going through different seasons in our church: different times when we can do various things and not do others. Ecclesiastes 3 reminds us of different times for different activities. To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted; A time to kill and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; A time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get and a time to loose; a time to keep and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war and a time of peace.... I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labor, this is the gift of God. Seasons in our world, in our lives and in the church all change continuously. They also seem to remain constant as they repeat themselves in a cyclical way. Our task is to understand the God seasons we are in and what it is time for us to do today. We cannot control or change our seasons. The preacher who wrote Ecclesiastes realized this and advises us to quit complaining and to live the best we can in the season in which we are. Enjoy the snow in winter, the warmth of summer, the colors of fall and the new flowers of spring. I used to push the church to get much done in the summer when I was out of school. Now I realize that certain things are meant to happen and Have a wonderful summer Pastor Dave Repenning Safe Sanctuary Background Checks Thank you to the many people who have submitted their background checks through our church website. Your willingness to do this is enabling us to take a small step to protect the children and youth of our church while giving you the privacy of having background check information on a secure website to which only the pastor and the Staff Parish Relations committee chairperson have access. By using this site you have eliminated the need for us to keep files in the church where security could be compromised. They have been in Albania since 2005. Ken and Dawn are electrical/electronics engineers committed to spreading the word of God to as many people as they can reach. The Global Partner vision is to see a growing community of God through Jesus Christ. Ken directs the Global Partner team as mission director to see this vision fulfilled and Albanian churches planted. Evangelical Christianity is now an official religion in Albania and is no longer considered a cult. There have been major road improvements made throughout Albania and this past year improvements have been made to water and sewer systems. A much needed medical clinic has been opened in Kenet and an Albanian Physical Therapist has been added to the staff. Despite financial difficulties The Day Care Center for Children of Widows, Divorced Women and Suffering Families has remained open. An after school center that Ken and Dawn helped establish has been a success and assists children with their studies. The Bishops are evaluating and praying for a broader influence to improve the education of the children in Kenet. The team has made major strides in Language Acquisition and made progress in Team Recruitment. The DeRosett family, Becky Hawkins and Nicole Schara are soon to be part of their team. Dawn recently underwent double knee replacement surgery in Vienna and has made a remarkable recovery. As an update of John, Ken says, “In May, John appeared in court and the final verdict for his case found him guilty of a lesser charge. He received jail time and a huge fine: It was suggested that he pay officials off but he refused. The verdict is being appealed.” “We just had local elections and people here have been very stressed as the corrupt, manipulative and aggressive political wheels spin,” says Ken. He also asks that we “Pray for God to use this time not only to put the people He uses in power, but to bring this country to the point of recognition of the need for Christ in their lives. Pray as we continue to shine the light on the people we know and love.” If you are a Facebook user and wish to communicate with the Bishops, send a friend request to “Dawninn’ Albania to share prayer requests and stories, or email them at Ken Bishop, kadbishop@yahoo.com. Global Partners is the international arm of the Wesleyan Church, partners with Wesleyan churches in Africa, CaribAtlantic, Ilbero-America and Pacific areas while expanding ministry in Asia, Europe and the Muslim world. Dawn Bishop is the daughter of Ed and Anita Harz Perry and a niece to Fritz and Joan Harz. Heat production is affected by temperature, humidity, sun exposure, wind, and clothing. The body is wondrously made, and has a thermoregulatory system that is responsible for allowing the body to heat and cool itself as necessary. This system can be overwhelmed by too much heat, dehydration, diuretics, many medical conditions, and medications. High humidity retards the evaporation of sweat, so pay attention to the Heat Index. Heat related illnesses can happen to us as children, athletes, adults working outside in the heat, and senior citizens who have poor circulation, changes in the skin, heart, lung, thyroid, kidney diseases and high blood pressure. Heat edema is the swelling of the hands and feet when blood vessels expand and fluid pools under the skin. Lifestyle factors that can increase risk include: unbearably hot living quarters, lack of transportation to go to a cooler place, overdressing, obesity, and drinking alcohol, soda, and caffeine that can rob our bodies of fluids. To prevent dehydration we need to take in more fluids than we are losing, including water, sports drinks, Pedialyte, and juices. The symptoms of dehydration include: dry skin, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, thirst, less frequent urination, headache, increased heart rate and breathing, and inability to sweat. Perspiring is very important in the cooling-down process. If not treated, heat can build up to dangerous levels leading to Heat Syncope --fainting caused when the body compensates for too much heat by diverting blood from the brain to the skin. Heat cramps-are muscle contractions in the back of the legs that usually respond to rest, a cool environment, and drinking water. Heat Exhaustion -- Extreme fatigue characterized by muscle aches, nausea, fever, clammy skin, diarrhea, rapid pulse, vomiting, and weakness. And the big one: Heat Stroke --which is usually fatal if not treated. It is the failure of the body’s temperature control systems. Symptoms include: confusion, agitation, hyperventilation, racing pulse, lethargy, convulsions, and eventually unconsciousness. The body temperature can go above 110 degrees, which can damage major organs. The symptoms can develop over several days, or in a single burst of strenuous activity. To treat any of the above, the main thing is to cool off and replace the fluids in our bodies as necessary. This can be anything from moving to a cool place with a cold wet cloth to the head, and drinking water, to ice packs in the groin and under the arms, to going to the emergency room and getting intravenous fluids if we are unable to drink fluids. If the person has confusion, rapid pulse, and rapid shallow breathing, Call 911. Heat stroke is a medical emergency! So, keep your cool, stay out of the sun, slow down, and remember your pets, too!!! “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in you, which you have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” I Corinthians 6:19, 20. Bonnie Kanady, RN Come make a splash with us!
