Monday • Morning show contest question- The winning class will be announced Wednesday on the morning show and will receive a pizza party. • Mortimer will be on the morning show to hype up meeting the state goal of 33 million extra minutes. Students will read an additional 33 minutes. You can be creative with this. Time can be split up throughout the day, make it fun with Lounging for Literacy-PJs, pillows, or whatever other fun you can think of. Tuesday • Teacher Swap- during the normal RtI block, students will stay in their homerooms and teachers will swap to be a guest reader. All specials and ESE teachers will be stationed in the hallways to monitor students during the transition. Please have a student hold your classroom door open. Co-teach teachers may be used a substitute reader if someone is absent. • Bookmark designs will begin when you are finished reading to your group. Bookmarks will be distributed to homeroom teachers and ready for you. Please make sure students have supplies needed. Bookmarks can be finished later and are due to the media center bucket no later than Wednesday afternoon. Please make sure you stay in your guest room for the full 30 minutes. Wednesday • Contest winner announced on morning show. • Hat’s off to Reading! Students wear hats to celebrate. Thursday Bookmark Bonanza! Students will receive a bookmark designed by another ABES student when they check out books from the media center. Friday Circulation Craziness! As students visit the media center, alarms will Ballast Point randomly ring. If a student is first at circulation when the alarm goes off, they will win a prize. 1) Teachers will track class total independent reading minutes for the week of January 13-17th 2) Teachers will report their totals on Friday afternoon to the Reading Coach 3) Reading Coach will award the top reading classes from each grade level with a treat 4) Grade level winners will be announced on the morning show Bellamy We will have a "guest reader" every morning on BIA. The reader will share a bit about their own reading life and read a favorite book. To encourage school wide reading, every student that reads a book next week will receive a star. Students will write their name on it and return to their teacher. Teachers will turn these in daily to Julie Barnes and they will be added to the windows outside the media center. Our goal is to cover the windows with stars!!! We will have a school wide DEAR (Drop Everythihg and Read). Our minutes spent reading will be turned into the state to add to our Millions of Minutes. The state wide goal is 30 million minutes. Read with a buddy day. Students will be able to team up and read with a buddy from another class to help build confidence. Guest Reader Day with parents and members of the staff. Reader's Theater Day to practice fluency. Character Day is optional. This will be done on Friday. Bevis Monday: Lang. Arts teachers will provide an extra 20 minutes of reading time to students in the classroom. Monday - Friday: "Shoot for the Moon!" Read-at-Home classroom competition A bulletin board will be created in the cafeteria. Each class with have a rocket ship and total minutes read each day will be tracked. Each night, students will log the total number of minutes they read at home. Each morning, teachers add up the minutes and submit total to the Media Specialist. Parent volunteers will move the rockets each day to track progress. At the end of the week, each student in the winning class at each grade level will get a new book. On-going: The media specialist will record a read-aloud of a space-themed book. Teachers will access the video through her website to view with their class sometime during the week. Monday 12:50-1:20 and Tuesday-Friday 1:50-2:20. Students who have specials during that time will take their DEAR books with them to Specials. All custodians, resource teachers, etc...will join a classroom during DEAR time and immerse themselves in their book of choice. • Parent Read Alouds- Teachers may schedule 15-20 minute windows for parents to come in and do a read aloud in their child's classroom. • Favorite Books Chart- Classrooms can create a poster that highlights each students' favorite book and why. Post it outside the classroom for others to see book recommendations. • Faculty Members Highlighted on Morning Show- Faculty members may sign up to go on the morning show and celebrate literacy in any creative way they'd like. Thank you to Ms. Campion for already signing up and agreeing to dress as a favorite book character. • Snowflake/Blizzard Challenge- Classrooms will work towards meeting their snowflake challenge. Classes will read 100 books each prior to the 100th day of school. The goal is that each child leaves that day with a “new to them” book. If a student forgets a book on the day of the swap send them to our office room 431 at 8:30 so we can give them a book to swap. (Teachers if you have books you no longer want that you would like to donate for the kids that forget a book please send them down to us.) • Friday- Wear a readable t-shirt day. Encourage the students to wear t-shirts that have words written on them. During the day have students read other students’ shirts as they travel throughout the school. Monday (1/13/19)- Kick off and Door Decorating Contest**** -Mrs. Teeter and Mrs. Jeffords will stop by the morning show to kick off Literacy week! -Begin decorating your classroom door like a book cover. Your door can represent a single book or a compilation of books by 1 or more authors. You have all week to work with your class to decorate your door (you can even start this week!). Winners will be selected on Friday 1-17-13. We will select a winner from Prek-1st, 2nd-3rd, and 4th-5th. Winners will receive a treat the following week. Tuesday (1/14/13)- Read Alouds from non instructional staff -We are currently working on a schedule for this. Any staff member who does not have a homeroom that would like to do a read aloud will be able to select 2-3 classes to read to. We will send out a schedule of suggested times for each grade level to visit the gallery to make it manageable. Schwartz on the morning show throughout the week. • The Question of the Week will be about reading and literacy this week. • The book " How Big?" by Jessica Gunderson will be read on the morning show to show students examples of wacky ways to compare size. • A Peer Book Suggestion easel will be displayed for students to recommend Lutz their favorite books to peers and write a short sentence why they recommend it. • Throughout the week staff members are invited to share their favorite book on the morning show and any non-classroom teacher or teacher assistant that are available are invited to read to classes. • A bulletin board in the Media Center has been created that displays a picture of teachers favorite books. On Friday everyone is invited to wear a sport shirt to spread the message "Score with Books." About 150 students will rotate through the presentation in groups of 30 throughout the day at each site. The Museum of Science and Industry is providing the 30 minute workshops for the groups rotating through the exhibit and Just Read, Florida! is doing the welcome and encouragement to the kids to "accelerate their reading". Wednesday: Buddy Reading- pair up with a class (primary pairs with intermediate) and spend 20 – 30 minutes reading together in pairs or small groups. Thursday & Friday : Book Hook- have students create written or oral advertisements for their favorite book. They could be on paper, poster, or a commercial. The book hooks will not be judged. However, commercials may be shown on the morning show at Ms. Dixon’s discretion. Lynn and I have worked hard to create a fun week for the students to celebrate their literacy across the school. We have also worked hard to keep from adding "extras" to your already busy schedules. Below is a description of the week's events. School-Wide MyON Minute Challenge: Grade levels will have an opportunity to compete for MOST minutes of reading on MyOn in a week!!! K-2 in Media Center Lab (see the sign up sheet in the Media Center) 3-5 in the High Stakes Testing Lab- Lab closed from 10:45-11:45 for KG RTI (see sign up sheet in the lab) There will be one TOP winning class from K-2 and one TOP winning class from 35 who will get a PIZZA PARTY!!!! Friday- Wild about Reading (wear a wild shirt) Mrs. Eastep visits the morning show to talk about how reading helps create wild art ideas. Mystery Reader answers will be turned into the media center and winners names will be pulled for small prizes. There is NOT a special slip of paper for this, just have students bring their guesses to Lynn or Ruth in the Media Center after the morning show. We will notify winners.
