Famous authors reading stories will be played before the morning show.

Morning show contest question- The winning class will be
announced Wednesday on the morning show and will receive a pizza party.

Mortimer will be on the morning show to hype up meeting the state
goal of 33 million extra minutes. Students will read an additional 33
minutes. You can be creative with this. Time can be split up throughout
the day, make it fun with Lounging for Literacy-PJs, pillows, or whatever
other fun you can think of.
Tuesday

Teacher Swap- during the normal RtI block, students will stay in
their homerooms and teachers will swap to be a guest reader. All specials
and ESE teachers will be stationed in the hallways to monitor students
during the transition. Please have a student hold your classroom door open.
Co-teach teachers may be used a substitute reader if someone is absent.
•
Bookmark designs will begin when you are finished reading to your
group. Bookmarks will be distributed to homeroom teachers and ready for
you. Please make sure students have supplies needed. Bookmarks can be
finished later and are due to the media center bucket no later than
Wednesday afternoon. Please make sure you stay in your guest room for
the full 30 minutes.

Bookmark Bonanza! Students will receive a bookmark designed by
another ABES student when they check out books from the media center.

Circulation Craziness! As students visit the media center, alarms will

randomly ring. If a student is first at circulation when the alarm goes off, they will
win a prize.

We will have a "guest reader" every morning on BIA. The reader will share a bit
about their own reading life and read a favorite book.
To encourage school wide reading, every student that reads a book next week will
receive a star. Students will write their name on it and return to their teacher.
Teachers will turn these in daily to Julie Barnes and they will be added to the
windows outside the media center. Our goal is to cover the windows with stars!!!
We will have a school wide DEAR (Drop Everythihg and Read). Our minutes
spent reading will be turned into the state to add to our Millions of Minutes.
The state wide goal is 30 million minutes.
Read with a buddy day. Students will be able to team up and read with a buddy
from another class to help build confidence.
Guest Reader Day with parents and members of the staff.
Reader's Theater Day to practice fluency.
Character Day is optional. This will be done on Friday.

Monday: Lang. Arts teachers will provide an extra 20 minutes of reading time to
students in the classroom.
Monday - Friday: "Shoot for the Moon!" Read-at-Home classroom competition
A bulletin board will be created in the cafeteria. Each class with have a
rocket ship and total minutes read each day will be tracked.
Each night, students will log the total number of minutes they read at home.
Each morning, teachers add up the minutes and submit total to the Media
Specialist.
Parent volunteers will move the rockets each day to track progress.
At the end of the week, each student in the winning class at each grade
level will get a new book.
On-going: The media specialist will record a read-aloud of a space-themed book.
Teachers will access the video through her website to view with their class
sometime during the week.

we are also working on building Reading Stamina to celebrate literacy week. We

• DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read). The ENTIRE school (teachers
included) will participate in DEAR time at the same time. Monday 12:50-1:20
and Tuesday-Friday 1:50-2:20. Students who have specials during that time
will take their DEAR books with them to Specials. All custodians, resource
teachers, etc...will join a classroom during DEAR time and immerse themselves
in their book of choice.
• Parent Read Alouds- Teachers may schedule 15-20 minute windows for parents
to come in and do a read aloud in their child's classroom.
• Favorite Books Chart- Classrooms can create a poster that highlights each
students' favorite book and why. Post it outside the classroom for others to see
book recommendations.
• Faculty Members Highlighted on Morning Show- Faculty members may sign
up to go on the morning show and celebrate literacy in any creative way they'd
like. Please see sign-up sheet in mailroom. Thank you to Ms. Campion for
already signing up and agreeing to dress as a favorite book character.
• Snowflake/Blizzard Challenge- Classrooms will work towards meeting their
snowflake challenge. Classes will read 100 books each prior to the 100th day
of school. (more information to come from Ms. Wells)
Buddy Reading- Classrooms may choose to 'buddy' with another class and have
students read with each other (Suggestion: Across grade levels)

Just heard back from Cimino's Media Specialist, and she replied that a DVD for the
Cimino
PSA contest was submitted. Also, the focus that week will be a big push on all the
different genres! When expanding your minutes, expand your genres!
• All students are encouraged to read an extra 33 minutes on Monday. We

show to show students examples of wacky ways to compare size.
• A Peer Book Suggestion easel will be displayed for students to
recommend their favorite books to peers and write a short sentence why
they recommend it.
• Throughout the week staff members are invited to share their favorite
book on the morning show and any non-classroom teacher or teacher
assistant that are available are invited to read to classes.
• A bulletin board in the Media Center has been created that displays a
picture of teachers favorite books.
On Friday everyone is invited to wear a sport shirt to spread the message "Score
with Books."

Monday- DEAR Time- We are participating in the state’s Million Minute
Marathon. We will be having a school wide Drop Everything And Read from 8:10-8:30.
Please make sure everyone (including you) take a break to enjoy reading a good book.

Tuesday- Buddy Reading- Take 20 minutes out of your day and have your
students buddy read with a partner.

Wednesday- Mystery Readers- Sign up with your suitemate for a time for a
mystery reader to come to your class and read one of their favorite books. A sign-up
sheet will be next to the mailboxes on Monday morning. Please remember to pair up
with your suitemate and choose a time that will work for you both.

Thursday- Book Swap- Tell students to bring in an old book from home that they
no longer want. (Have students write a note in their agenda so they don’t forget) Then
give students 10 minutes during the day to swap the book they brought in with a book
another student brought in. The goal is that each child leaves that day with a “new to
them” book. If a student forgets a book on the day of the swap send them to our office
room 431 at 8:30 so we can give them a book to swap. (Teachers if you have books you
no longer want that you would like to donate for the kids that forget a book please send
them down to us.)

Friday- Wear a readable t-shirt day. Encourage the students to wear t-shirts that
have words written on them. During the day have students read other students’ shirts as
they travel throughout the school. Remind students that the shirts need to be
appropriate.

Monday (1/13/19)- Kick off and Door Decorating Contest****
-Mrs. Teeter and Mrs. Jeffords will stop by the morning show to kick off
Literacy week!
-Begin decorating your classroom door like a book cover. Your door can
represent a single book or a compilation of books by 1 or more authors. You have
all week to work with your class to decorate your door (you can even start this
week!). Winners will be selected on Friday 1-17-13. We will select a winner from
Prek-1st, 2nd-3rd, and 4th-5th. Winners will receive a treat the following week.
We are looking forward to your creative, student led designs and to turning
Kingswood into a walking library!
Tuesday (1/14/13)- Read Alouds from non instructional staff
-We are currently working on a schedule for this. Any staff member who
does not have a homeroom that would like to do a read aloud will be able to select
2-3 classes to read to. They will then work with the teachers to set up a time
during that week to read. Read Alouds can occur on Tuesday, the designated day,
or at any time during literacy week. More to follow on this! Stay tuned.
Wednesday (1/15/13) DEAR (DROP EVERYTHING AND READ)
-School wide DEAR. Time will be announced prior to literacy week. We
will keep you posted.
-Feel free to bring a healthy snack and blanket and have a reading picnic
with your class or enjoy reading in the comfort of your classroom.
-Teachers will bring a book to read during this time as well.
Thursday (1/16/13)- Poetry Day
-Mrs. Teeter will invite some students to read poems on the morning show
(IF YOU HAVE ANY STUDENT VOLUNTEERS PLEASE LET ME
KNOW- THEY CAN READ ORIGINAL POEMS OR I CAN PROVIDE A
POEM).
-Use this day to read or write different types of poetry in your classroom!
Free choice! Have fun and share what you create.
Friday (1/17/13)- The BIG FINALE AND GALLERY WALK****
-Use butcher paper to create a poster for your favorite class book.
-You can make a book jacket, book recommendation poster, a poster
showing the strategies you used or learned while reading this text, etc. Be
CREATIVE.
-We would like to hang the posters up on Thursday (1/16/) afternoon, so
please have your poster complete if you wish to participate. Mrs. Jeffords and I
will stop by on Thursday of that week to pick up completed posters.
-During the day on Friday, take your class for a gallery walk to view the
posters. We will send out a schedule of suggested times for each grade level to
visit the gallery to make it manageable.

they will require you to create something with your class. We wanted you to have
this information prior to lit week so that you have time to brainstorm and create if

Reading Accelerates Success!
Before Literacy Week:
Bookmark decorating contest that would be due 1/10/13. There would be a winner from
the primary grades and a winner from the intermediate grades. The winner’s bookmark
would be made and available in the Media Center.
Each class would choose at least 1 student to do a Book Hook for their favorite book. They
would come down to Mr. McGregor to be video-taped. Each day a different grade level’s
video will be shown on the Morning Show.
Every day of Literacy Week:
At random times throughout the day, there will be an announcement to Drop Everything
And Read (DEAR). Teachers, students, staff members, etc… everyone will read for 10
minutes! There will then be an announcement to resume typical activities once the time
has passed.
Door Decorating Contest – students decorate the door with something about reading. It
could be about class favorite text, a favorite author, etc.

All students are encouraged to read an extra 33 minutes on Monday. We
will wear funky socks to spread the message, "Reading Rocks!"

The Media Specialist will be reading "How Much is a Million" by David
M. Schwartz on the morning show throughout the week.

The Question of the Week will be about reading and literacy this week.

The book " How Big?" by Jessica Gunderson will be read on the morning
show to show students examples of wacky ways to compare size.

A Peer Book Suggestion easel will be displayed for students to recommend

Our 2nd/3rd grade reading elective students are writing a song called "What Does

Science and Industry is providing the 30 minute workshops for the groups rotating
through the exhibit and Just Read, Florida! is doing the welcome and
encouragement to the kids to "accelerate their reading".

Monday: Poster contest-The posters can be done as a class or individually and
will be due on Friday Jan. 17. There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner from
primary and intermediate. Poster criteria will be given to teachers on Jan. 13.
Monday- Friday: Family Reading Time-“Million Minutes” of Reading- we will
participate in a state wide 20 minutes of reading school wide. It could be
independent reading or read aloud for 20 minutes during Family Reading Time,
7:30-8:00.
Wednesday: Buddy Reading- pair up with a class (primary pairs with
intermediate) and spend 20 – 30 minutes reading together in pairs or small groups.
Thursday & Friday : Book Hook- have students create written or oral
advertisements for their favorite book. They could be on paper, poster, or a
commercial. The book hooks will not be judged. However, commercials may be
shown on the morning show at Ms. Dixon’s discretion.
Lynn and I have worked hard to create a fun week for the students to
celebrate their literacy across the school. We have also worked hard to keep
from adding "extras" to your already busy schedules.
Below is a description of the week's events.
A 1/2 sheet flyer will go home Friday with students about the week's events.
In RED are the optional activities that would require you to schedule
something into your week.
School-Wide MyON Minute Challenge:
Grade levels will have an opportunity to compete for MOST minutes of reading on
MyOn in a week!!!
To help, classes will get to sign up for an additional 30min. of MyON reading
time in the computer labs.
K-2 in Media Center Lab (see the sign up sheet in the Media Center)
3-5 in the High Stakes Testing Lab- Lab closed from 10:45-11:45 for KG RTI (see
sign up sheet in the lab)
There will be one TOP winning class from K-2 and one TOP winning class from 35 who will get a PIZZA PARTY!!!!
Other top classes from K-2 will receive a reading pencil and winners in top classes
from 3-5 will receive a reading flashlight.

Friday- Wild about Reading (wear a wild shirt) Mrs. Eastep visits the morning
show to talk about how reading helps create wild art ideas.
Mystery Reader answers will be turned into the media center and winners names
will be pulled for small prizes. There is NOT a special slip of paper for this, just
have students bring their guesses to Lynn or Ruth in the Media Center after the
morning show. We will notify winners.
Additional Activities:
• Monday 1/13: D.E.A.R time (classes may choose to participate at a BEST
time for them)
• K-1 Read Aloud Sign Up (the sign up sheet will be in the Media Center)
• Friday 1/17: G2 Bill Harris from the Ruskin Public Library will have a 2:00
and 2:30 presentation with 2nd grade to sign them up for a public library

1) Track their class total minutes for independent reading (Mon-Fri)
2) Report their totals on Friday afternoon on their dry erase board on the
outside of their classroom door.
3) Reading Coach/Reading Resource will award the class (from each grade
level) with the most total minutes for the week with a small reading treat (ex:
"Bookmark and Brownie Bites"...for taking 'A "Bite" out of Reading!'--still
deciding upon this).

the Million Minute Marathon aiming to reach the collaborative goal of 30
minutes. We are asking that students in our school read for an additional 30
minutes during the day (beyond regular school work) in celebration of literacy.
These minutes may be available at various times across the school day.
Tuesday, January 14th: Media Center Scavenger Hunt
Wednesday, January 15th: Mystery Reader -Teachers will be able to swap classes
to do a read aloud. It will be a surprise to the students.
