Letter to Students
August 2011
Dear Teacher Education Students:
The School of Education’s elementary and secondary education committees have put together
this Field Experience Handbook to provide both an overview of the process and the specific
information you will need to contribute to your success in the field experience component
affiliated with your Teaching and Learning coursework. Field experiences are designed to
provide practical classroom experiences and to enhance your university coursework. As an
integral part of your teacher preparation program, field experience is linked to a particular course
in the program. The Office of Undergraduate Academic Services will be responsible for
providing the site placements. During the placements, you will be providing evidence of the
Florida Educator Accomplished Practices, ESOL standards/competencies and skills, reading
competencies, as well as content-specific competencies based upon your education major
through LiveText submissions supervised by the Office of Teacher Education Programs. The
Professor-of-Record for your course will be responsible for the grading of each course including
the field experience component.
This document is subject to the UM Honor Code and UM Bulletin as well as to the specific rules,
regulations and procedures which govern the student placements at your schools. The
information contained in this handbook also replaces any information written in any other field
experience handbook prior to this date. In fact, this handbook will be replaced by future updated
handbooks. Please be advised that the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) may implement
new requirements for certification. These requirements will be mandatory with or without
notice in this handbook.
It is with great appreciation and gratitude that we thank both the area faculty members and student
representatives listed below who worked so diligently on creating this handbook. Their work will
guide you to develop a clear vision of how the field experience process operates. Good luck in
this exciting, challenging, and rewarding part of your pre-service teacher education program.

Fingerprinting
Fingerprinting Procedures
◊
Why do I have to be fingerprinted?
◊
School districts in the State of Florida require a criminal background check for
field placement of students and interns. Fingerprinting and criminal background
check procedures are at the student’s expense. Students with felony arrests may
wish to consider these requirements carefully, and if necessary, seek advice from
5
TAL Field Experience Handbook
an advisor in the School of Education before enrolling in courses with field
experience requirements.
◊
◊
◊
◊
◊
On May 2, 2005 the Jessica Lunsford Act was signed into legislation. This Act
provided several safeguards to protect Florida's children from sexual predators. In
addition to toughening the regulation of registered offenders, this Act expanded
the background check requirements for school districts to include all contracted
workers and consultants. This law enables every school district to better protect
the children in its care. Additionally, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement
agreed to implement a database to track arrests of school district employees and
contractors and notify the school districts when an employee is arrested. This new
tracking system will help ensure that the children in our schools remain safe.
Who is affected?
◊
Every field experience student entering a M-DCPS
◊
All students in teacher education programs
At what point in the program do I get fingerprinted?
◊
You are advised to complete the fingerprinting requirement in TAL 103. You
must complete this requirement before enrolling in any TAL course at the 200
level or above.
What do I need?
◊
A current official picture identification,
◊
AND a Social Security Card,
◊
AND M-DCPS Fingerprinting Form (FM-6524).
◊
AND a $71.00 money order payable to the “School Board Miami-Dade
Fingerprinting.” A money order can be obtained at any post office, including the
one on the UM campus, or at any CVS store.
What is the procedure for international students?
◊
6
International students must bring their passport and a $71.00 money order
payable to the “School Board Miami-Dade Fingerprinting.”
Where do I go to complete fingerprinting?
◊
This may be completed ONLY at M-DCPS’s main office between 7:00-4:00 M-F.
◊
You should allow a couple of hours to complete the fingerprinting process. This process
takes longer in the afternoon.
◊

You can take the MetroRail to the Government Center Station and then take the
MetroMover to the School Board Station. The School Board Building is across
the street from the Station.
The Florida Department of Education requires each school district to take
responsibility for fingerprinting efforts. M-DCPS mandates that all students be
fingerprinted through their office to ensure eligibility.
I have been fingerprinted in my home town. Can I use that?
◊
No
Time Frame for Fingerprinting
◊
We should have approval within 10 business days of your fingerprinting.
◊
You may not enter a classroom until you have been cleared. (But you still may attend
orientations at the school site, if required.)
◊
You will receive an approved M-DCPS Security Clearance Card that you will be required
to present to your assigned school.
◊
Your M-DCPS Security Clearance Card should be picked up in the Office of
Undergraduate Academic Services (MB 312).
◊
Students MUST contact the school where they have been placed immediately. Not doing
so may result in the school not accepting you.
Fingerprinting “Issues”
◊
◊
Is there an appeal process?
◊
Yes, you will receive a letter from M-DCPS stating the reason for denial.
◊
You will be required to write a letter to the M-DCPS Office of Professional
Standards with a written response.
How long does it take?
◊
Determined by the M-DCPS Office of Professional Standards

Section 3
Placement
◊
◊
◊
How is my placement made?
◊
A Field Experience Information Sheet is given to all students during advising.
Others receive it electronically. If you do not receive it, be sure that the Office of
Undergraduate Academic Services has your current e-mail address in its database.
We strongly recommend that you use your UM email address when
communicating with our Office.
◊
Some placements are made at the request of the professor.
How do I change my placement?
◊
A request for a change of placement should be made only after serious
consideration on the part of the student.
◊
A written request for a change of placement must be submitted to the Student
Services Advisory Board via Marissa Stevenson (305-284-3415).
◊
Requests will be decided on a case-by-case basis.
Are there other students assigned to the same school?
◊
◊
Are music students placed in music settings?
◊
◊
◊
The Office of Undergraduate Academic Services works closely with the
Department of Music Education at the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music.
Placement in a music setting will be made, if appropriate, based on TAL course
content and requirements.
Are school-based orientations mandatory? Can I go if my fingerprinting is not complete?
◊
Not all schools hold an orientation. If they do, then attendance is mandatory. If
your assigned school does have an orientation, you will be advised of the date and
time. If you have a conflict with your class schedule, you are advised to consult
with the course instructor.
◊
You may go to the orientation if your fingerprinting is not yet complete.
However, you may NOT report to a classroom until your fingerprints have been
cleared and you have received your M-DCPS Security Clearance Card.
To whom do I report?
◊
◊
The Office of Undergraduate Academic Services strives to cluster groups of
students at the same school. It is recommended that you arrange to carpool with
other students.
You report to the school’s main office and ask to meet with the field experience
contact person.
What do I have to return to the Office of Undergraduate Academic Services?
◊
Field Experience Contract
◊
Field Experience Student Attendance Record
TAL Field Experience Handbook
◊
◊

complete your e-portfolio for FEAPS.
◊
Clinical Teacher Evaluation – This should be filled out on LiveText at the end of
your experience.
What if I have more than one TAL class?
◊
◊
All of your field experiences may be completed at the same school, unless
determined otherwise by your professors.
What do I bring to the school?
◊
◊
9
The appropriate forms from the Field Experience Handbook and documentation
from your instructor, Fingerprinting M-DCPS Security Clearance Card, Field
Experience Contract, Field Experience Student Attendance Record, and Field
Experience Evaluation Report.
How do I dress for my field experiences?
◊
Always dress professionally. Follow the guidelines established by the school site
where you have been placed.
Final notes on placement
◊
Schools are notified, via e-mail or fax, with a list of names of students who will be
completing field experiences.
◊
Return the Field Experience Contract, the Field Experience Student Attendance Record,
and the Field Experience Evaluation Report to the Office of Undergraduate Academic
Services.
◊
The Field Experience Contract should be turned in within the first two weeks of
beginning your field experience.
◊
Please remember that you are the guests at each school site and represent the University
of Miami and the School of Education.
◊
Field Experience Placements should begin as soon as you have your M-DCPS Security
Clearance Card. When calling the school, please leave your local phone number (305 or
786 area code) and UM e-mail address. If you do not have a local phone number, the
school will not be able to return your calls. Contact your school during the first two
weeks of the semester. If you do not hear back from the school within a week, you may
visit the school’s main office directly. If you need further assistance, contact Ms. Gina
Astorini for assistance (305-284-3826). If you wait until the middle of the semester, the
school has the prerogative to deny you access to the school.

LiveText
The School of Education uses LiveText to collect and aggregate data for evaluating and
enhancing curricula. It is also used as an invaluable accreditation tool for UM’s Teacher
Education Programs. All students enrolled in a Teacher Education Program are required to
purchase LiveText and use it throughout their program of study.
Some of the elements that students complete via LiveText include:
 Submission of course-based assignments.
 Completion of an electronic portfolio demonstrating competency of all 12 Florida
Educator Accomplished Practices (FEAPs), and other curricular competencies pertinent
to their program of study.
The portfolio is a collection of personal evidence and reflections that exhibit an individual’s
progress in becoming a teacher. The portfolio integrates all aspects of the program of study
including course work, field experiences, and associate teaching, and prepares students for
continued professional growth.
If you a teacher education student, you are advised to purchase LiveText during TAL 103. You
must purchase LiveText before enrolling in any TAL course at the 200 level or above.
Formal LiveText orientation will occur at the following points in your program of study:
 Elementary Education – TAL 305 Classroom and Behavior Management
 Secondary Education – TAL 204 Meeting the Educational Needs of Diverse Secondary
Learners
LiveText Evidence
All students enrolled in a Teacher Education Program will be required to purchase LiveText and
use it throughout their program of study. If you have not been trained in LiveText you must
contact Donner Valle at (305) 284-2425 or dvalle@miami.edu. His office is located in Merrick
219.

Code of Ethics
UM Honor Code Policy
This code is established for the undergraduate student body, to protect the academic integrity of
the University of Miami, to encourage consistent ethical behavior among undergraduate students,
and to foster a climate of fair competition. While a student's commitment to honesty and
personal integrity is assumed and expected, this Code is intended to provide an added measure of
assurance that, in fulfilling the University's requirements, a student's work will never involve
falsification, plagiarism, or other deception regarding the true nature of the materials presented.
Each student is responsible for completing the academic requirements of each course in the
manner indicated by the faculty.
The official University of Miami Honor Code can be downloaded from the UM Dean of Students
website:
http://www6.miami.edu/dean-student/honor-code/
TAL Plagiarism Policy
All students enrolled in courses offered by the Department of Teaching and Learning (TAL) are
expected to visit the following link and read one or more of the articles cited on plagiarism:
http://www.library.miami.edu/research/userguides/student_writing_resources.html
For Education majors, this will constitute part of their preparation for the Ethics requirement of
the Florida Accomplished Practices (FEAPs).
At a minimum, students will receive an automatic Fail for any assignment that shows even
minimal evidence of any of the violations listed in the Student Handbook, i.e., cheating,
plagiarism, misrepresentation, collusion, falsification of data or fabrication of findings. The
student will not be allowed to improve that grade; that is, the assignment grade of F will factor
into the course grade. This decision will be reported to the Chair of TAL. The professor of record
will have absolute discretion to judge the severity of the offense and may extend the penalty to
an F in the course. In addition to the above, the faculty member may refer the student to the
University Honors Council or the School of Education Ethics Council, where the full range of
penalties specified in the Student Handbook may be applied; these include disciplinary warning,
disciplinary probation, suspension, or expulsion from the University.

The Code of Ethics and the Principles of Professional Conduct of the Education Profession
in Florida
All students enrolled in Teacher Education Programs at UM are introduced to the expectations
placed on teachers regarding their character and behavior. Traditionally teachers are held to a
high moral standard in a community. Florida’s Code of Ethics and Principles of Professional
Conduct of the Education Profession provides students with guideline and expectations as to
their conduct as members of the teaching profession.
The Official Code of Ethics can be downloaded from the FLDOE website:

General Guidelines and Forms for Clinical Teachers
To the Clinical Teacher
The Department of Teaching and Learning at UM School of Education very much appreciates
your having agreed to have a TAL student in your classroom this semester. Your role in helping
the prospective teacher is critically important.
You will be asked to complete a Field Experienced Evaluation Report for your student at the end
of the semester. Please contact the course instructor if your student is not attending regularly,
dresses inappropriately does a special project(s) that deserves recognition, etc. If there are

Field experience is one of the most important components of a course. A portion of the course
grade for the student is determined by the field experience.
Please follow the tips below when welcoming and nurturing the UM student:
1. Introduce the UM student to your class.
2. Share your classroom rules and expectations with the UM student.
3. Get the UM student involved as soon as possible. Don’t let her/him just sit and watch. You
may begin by asking the UM student to help individual students and small groups of
students.
4. Let the UM student develop a relationship with all your students, including the most
challenging students.
5. Encourage the UM student to reflect and evaluate. You may want to keep a learning dialogue
journal with the UM student.
6. Encourage the UM student to share new ideas and methodologies with you.
7. Ask the UM student to share with you a copy of any field-based assignments given by the
UM instructor.
8. Invite the UM student to special events – open house, field trip, parent-teacher conference,
faculty meeting, etc.
Note: You may receive a letter from the UM instructor that comprises the field experience
guideline and assignments for the course.

Cover Letter for Agreement with UM
[Date]
The University of Miami (UM), School of Education recognizes that this is a very busy
and exciting time of the year. In advance preparation for the 2011-2012 academic year
we are working diligently to ensure that our undergraduate education students have
quality field experience placements during the upcoming fall and spring semesters. We
would greatly appreciate your taking a few minutes to complete the attached Field
Experience Agreement Form (also copied below). Please fax the agreement form to
me by [deadline date].
All students participating in field experience(s) are required to complete M-DCPS
fingerprinting clearance. Our students have been instructed to present M-DCPS/UM
Clearance Information Cards upon arrival at the school. M-DCPS and UM have agreed
to the format that is used by all colleges and universities throughout the county. Dr.
Margareta Alonso at M-DCPS Teacher Education Center (TEC) may be reached for
confirmation if required (305.887.2002).
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office. We look forward to
hearing from you. Thank you for the continuous support you provide our UM teacher
education students.
Sincerely,
Gina F. Astorini

Field Experience Agreement for M-DCPS and UM
[Date]
The School of Education at UM greatly appreciates your participation in providing our
undergraduate students with successful field experiences. It is now required that our
students be placed with teachers who have been trained in clinical supervision. In
addition, it would be very helpful if the elementary and English teachers with whom we
place our students are ESOL endorsed, and the secondary teachers have the required
ESOL training. We understand that not all quality teachers have received these
trainings, but we are under a State mandate to follow these procedures. Please inform
your faculty that for each student they assist, they will receive one (1)
undergraduate/graduate credit that they may use at UM School of Education. If the
teacher assists one student for two (2) classes, the teacher will receive two (2) credits
and so on. Generally, students complete 15-20 hours per course per semester.
