CLASS TITLE: Laboratory Animal Technician

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:
Provides general care for laboratory animals; observes animals and assists with animal programs.
CHARACTERISTIC JOB DUTIES:
Provides general animal care (e.g., provides food and water to animals, maintains animal housing rooms); maintains
housing systems and equipment (e.g., cleans, sterilizes, disinfects, etc.).
Observes animals; compiles, records, and reports data on assigned animals.
Organizes breeding colonies.
Assists Manager, Laboratory Animal Resources, attending veterinarian, and researchers with animal programs;
restrains animals; administers medication and collects specimens.
Maintains inventory and related records; receives animals.
Prepares animals and equipment for surgery; euthanizes laboratory animals, when requested.
May serve on committees and attend meetings.
May function as a lead worker over Laboratory Animal Aides and/or student employees assisting with animal care.
Performs related duties as required.
REPORTS TO:
Manager, Laboratory Animal Resources or other designated supervisor
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Animal lab environment; exposed to cleaning solutions, animal odors, potential animal bites and diseases, wastes,
etc.; requires moderate physical effort to include frequent lifting up to 50 pounds (e.g., animals, cages), occasional
lifting up to 75 pounds (e.g., bags of feed), bending, and extended periods of walking and standing; may work varied
hours to include weekends and holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of six months experience
working in a laboratory or in an animal care environment. One year experience in a laboratory animal facility
preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Ability to understand basic program of animal care.
2. Skill in operating cleaning and sterilizing equipment.
3. Knowledge of nutrition.
4. Knowledge of animal biology.
5. Ability to demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 75 pounds.
6. Knowledge of governmental policies and regulations concerning animal care.
7. Knowledge of sanitation.
8. Knowledge of safety practices.
9. Ability to read, write and accurately follow oral and written instructions.
10. Skill in operation of restraint devices.
11. Ability to perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and
decimals, and to calculate percentages).
12. Manage time effectively, and set priorities.
13. Ability to operate a computer.
Other Requirements:
1. Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) preferred.
2. Valid Ohio driver's license may be required.
