This 3-hour session will provide you with a general understanding of various journalism formats such as news
articles, opinions pieces, and editorials. It will explore the definition of relevance in the media, for example, what
makes a good news story. The facilitators will help you write and pitch your own ideas to media outlets. They will also
discuss how to write a good blog post, provide examples of researchers who are blogging about their work, highlight
some social media tools, and examine some new initiatives at media outlets such as Nature.
Dr. Mary Lynn Young is director and associate professor at the UBC Graduate School of Journalism. She is a
recognized authority on gender and the media, newsroom sociology, media credibility, representations of crime,
media economics and content analysis. Dr. Young has worked as an editor, national business columnist and senior
crime reporter at major daily newspapers in Canada and the United States.
Alfred Hermida is an assistant professor of journalism. He is an award-winning online news pioneer, having been a
founding news editor of the BBC News website. During 16 years as a BBC TV, radio and online journalist, he covered
regional, national and international news. His research interests include participatory journalism, emerging genres of
digital journalism and integrated models of journalism education.
Eric Jandciu is currently a research coordinator at the UBC Graduate School of Journalism. He has also worked at
the international science, technology and medicine publishing house Springer in Heidelberg, Germany, and continues
to write and edit on a freelance basis for academic and educational publishers.
Seats are limited to 50 participants. Enrollment is restricted to UBC graduate students registered in the current
academic session, and UBC Post-Doctoral Fellows.
Location: Graduate Student Centre, 6371 Crescent Rd, UBC, Point Grey campus.
Admission: No charge for admission, but advance registration is required. We regret we cannot accommodate drop-ins who
have not received confirmation of acceptance, due to seating restrictions.
