Department of Performing & Fine Arts Communication Area Future Goals & Objectives 1. Program Development: a. To continue to strengthen speech and mass communication tracks b. To add journalism/public relations track (s) to the communication curriculum c. That the Area will continue to ensure that all courses offered will include at least one lecture that deals with professional conduct and ethical issues related to the subject matter (on line courses). d. Developing and revising courses 2. Retention: a. To maintain retention efforts through professional seminar/professional conferences b. To maintain efforts through a retention facilitator c. To maintain retention efforts through planned activities to encourage/motivate students d. To adopt a promotional video for communication major to disseminate to potential students via mail and to play during University visits/campus tours e. To continue to offer more advisement opportunities to all students, including a once per year semester major meeting. 3. Student Development a. To provide students with tools and skills necessary to compete in entry level positions in speech/mass communication fields b. To provide students with the tools to develop analytical and cognitive skills necessary to function in the field of speech and mass communication c. To train students to compete through hands –on demonstration in the use of supporting writing labs (journalism), television studio/radio station d. To provide students with real world experiences and learning opportunities by creating more outside internship possibilities e. To begin promoting students membership in professional organizations. f. To facilitate strong communication skills development through continuous preparation and analysis of oral and written messages through required speech/journalism courses g. To encourage students to volunteer in the University’s writing center. h. To encourage end of the semester senior presentations of research projects 4. Faculty Development: a. To explore new opportunities for attendance of media-related seminars and training sessions b. To stay abreast of changing industry standards and trends in the media c. To recruit and retain a cadre of outstanding faculty by including competitive recruitment packages and providing first year mentors to all new faculty d. Cooperative and collaborative scholarship e. To encourage conference participation 5. Leadership Development: a. To continue membership in professional organizations in the media and seek leadership and administrative roles b. To continue to provide services to campus committees and organizations c. To seek internal and external resources for seminars, workshops, debates, and opportunities for leadership development for faculty and students. 6. Graduate Programs: a. Encourage graduating seniors to focus on graduate programs b. Offer advisement to students on the importance of preparing for graduate/professional school, including preparing for GRE, GMAT and LSAT 7. Grant Writing: a. To identify more grant writing opportunities for speech/mass communication area 8. Accreditation: a. To make a concerted effort toward accreditation by seeking consultation with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (AEJMC) b.
