English 11 Period 3 11:15-12:45 Monday/ 10-27 The Beginning… Both these classes will be working to complete the final reading and analysis of the great drama THE CRUCIBLE. For the most part, students have indicated a deeper understanding of this work than first thought and I am pleased to see that. We will also discuss the convention of drama that appear in this very teachable selection, including, but not limited to the types of irony, stage directions, character analysis, and more… In addition, I will use tomorrow to summarize and discuss the review work for the mid-term which will be the only massive testing during the course of this class. Today will be a very active class as students prep for the Mid-term and receive their novel. Today, I will have them to concentrate on a review of all the vocabulary work to date. This will include the regular programmed vocabulary and the vocabulary from the literature which will give them approximately two hundred words to review. Having tested well during the term of the course, this should go well for them. Week Beginning: Oct. 27-Oct. 31, 2014 Tuesday/10-28 Classroom management and expectations always emphasized… Vocabulary Power Plus for the New SAT will not have its EIGHTH unit of testing on today. The students have, however, already prepared this work and will be tested on it when the new term begins next Wednesday. Today will find our completing the drama (in time for mid-term testing) THE CRUCIBLE and reminding the students to prepare daily for the midterms. The review information is attached to these plans and were given to the students last week. So the preparation has been ongoing. Students are aware that the final testing on the drama is included in the mid-term. Today’s concentration will be a review of all the literary selections we have covered to date. In addition, I will hand out the next great work: Hawthorne’s THE SCARLET LETTER for which students will receive a study guide for the novel and begin to mull over the types of creative projects they would want for this novel, even perhaps utilizing the Salem, Mass events and integrating the similarities… Wednesday/10-29 Mid-term Exam for this class: See attached review to delineate what is being covered. It may take this class and 4th period additional class time to complete this work, but I believe the advanced will be able to complete it in one period. The task of reading this information will wear on many of these students, but the necessity is quite implicit. They will have to deal with analyzing massive amount of information and putting it back together as application of their knowledge during the course of the term. Higher order thinking and critically analyzing rank where they should be going… The 4th block of advanced students should be able to complete this work; the exception will be the five cross-country students leaving for a competition in the district. They will have to complete this test on tomorrow… The students should also look ahead to the introduction to the Romantic Period in American literature; these authors are among the foremost in establishing the authenticity of our indigenous body of literature… Teacher: S. English 11 and English 11: Holt McDougal Literature: American Literature SOL’s for the week are as follows: 11.4a describing English 11 English 11 Advanced English 11 This group of students will be reminded of the spelling quiz scheduled for tomorrow representing their 180th spelling word for the term; it is clear that writing practice and other information are the benefit of weekly spelling quizzes. In addition, they will receive background information and a study guide for their first novel: The Narrative of Frederick Douglass (F. Douglass) The 9th spelling quiz will occur during the first part of each period. Students will also be reminded of the already prepared vocabulary for unit 8. They should review and ready themselves for their weekly vocabulary test beginning again when the new term commences on November 5, 2014. This testing day will be an exception as the term begins on Wednesday and the teacher workday will This class will take their Mid-term exam. I shall also hand our vocabulary for this novel and prepare to test the students in two parts… We shall establish the order that we will study the Romantic writers. The Internet portion of the test will consist of 30 questions similar to the Writing SOL. Review writing chapters and the mechanics of capitalization, commas, semi-colons, colons, apostrophes, hyphens, dashes, and parentheses. I know you know this information, but go over it so that you will do well. The Vocabulary Workshop portion of the test will cover units 1-7. Be sure to know all of the definitions and be prepared to have similar constructions, like synonyms, antonyms, fill in the blanks, select the correct word choice, etc. The Literary Selections from the text will review your knowledge of the following pieces: 1.
