Page 2 ABC2 Program Guide: Week 15 Watch Out For Program Highlights Sunday 9:00PM WORKING WITH PINTER Sunday, 05 April 2009 For 50 years Harold Pinter was at the centre of theatrical life not just in his home country of Britain, but all over the world. It is hard to overestimate the impact of his work. Not only a remarkable playwright with one of the most illustrious careers in contemporary theatre, Pinter's career also encompassed acting, poetry and political activism as a vociferous critic of American and British foreign policy. He also won the Nobel prize for literature. His 29 plays are continually produced with undimmed enthusiasm by school students and great directors and actors alike. In this hour-long program director Harry Burton invited Pinter to participate in a master class with actors and some observers. The film is an attempt to capture something of the collaborative spirit that made working with him a very special experience. The program includes extracts from several of his plays: No Man's Land, The Dumb Waiter, Old Times and The Homecoming, interspersed with a revealing interview with Pinter and his oldest theatrical collaborator, Henry Woolf, his friend of 60 years. Working With Pinter will be repeated on ABC2 – Sunday, April 12 at 3:30pm PRODUCTION DETAILS: 1 x 55 minutes. Executive Producers: Robert Fox and Michael Kustow; Producer: Caroline Ross Pirie; Director: Harry Burton. A Robert Fox Limited production. Intrepid twin doctors, Chris and Xand van Tulleken, travel to Malaysia, Tibet and India to find out. First stop is Kuala Lumpur where, among the chaos and religious fervour of a Hindu festival, the doctors are intrigued by the devotees’ ability to endure the extreme pain of facial piercing by entering a blissful trance. They conduct an experiment of their own. Chris continues his stressful job as a doctor in a London hospital while Xand prepares in the manner of a devotee, undergoing religious instruction in Malaysia. Seven days later, the two join thousands of devotees paying tribute to a Hindu god by having vels (small metal spears) thrust through their cheeks and tongue for a few hours. Who fairs better? The twins then travel to Nepal to explore the region's ancient Tibetan medical system that does not include any medicines to deal with pain. From there they travel to India to meet some atheist guru-busters who show how calmly they cope with the pain of being suspended in the air by hooks inserted into the skin of their backs using only the power of their mind without religious faith. Chris gives it a go. PRODUCTION DETAILS: Producer and Director: Tom Beard; Executive Producers: Andrew Palmer and Zam Baring. Narrated by Chris van Tulleken. Presented by Chris and Xand van Tulleken. Made by Keo Films for Channel 4 in association with Discovery Channel. Page 7 ABC2 Program Guide: Week 15 Watch Out For Friday 6:00PM COMPASS: STATIONS OF THE CROSS... THE MAKING OF Friday, 10 April 2009 The Good Friday Compass special will screen at 6pm on ABC2 and at 7:30pm on ABC1. When World Youth Day was staged in Sydney last year one of the principal events, the Stations of the Cross, a re-enactment of Christ's last hours, was beamed worldwide. Months of rehearsal, sweat, blood and tears went into the ambitious production headed up by Father Franco Cavarra, a one-time opera director who joined the Roman Catholic priesthood 10 years ago. It was his job to bring to life the 2000 year old story of Christ's suffering and death. "Clearly the responsibilities are very high. And therefore one is almost overwhelmed. Can we possibly do it? Can we bring it off? Can we do justice to it?" he tells the cameras in the opening days. First up was the task of casting the perfect "Jesus" and "Mary". Eager recruits from across Sydney and beyond turned up for the call out. All the performers were volunteers drawn to the project because of their faith. But behind the scenes were some highly experienced professionals including Father Franco, and the production designer Michael Scott Mitchell. Michael was responsible for everything from building the central props - including the crosses (two were needed: one for the street scenes, and one for the crucifixion); to how to keep Jesus warm during the dramatic crucifixion scene down by Sydney's foreshore where icy winds pushed the mid-winter temperature to near freezing point. On the day (18 July 2008) huge crowds flocked to St Mary's Cathedral, the Opera House and Darling Harbour to follow the three hour open air showcase. Now, for the first time viewers can see what happened behind the scenes, as well as selected highlights of the final production, in this Compass Easter Friday special. PRODUCTION DETAILS: Compass Executive Producer: Rose Hesp. Page 8 ABC2 Program Guide: Week 15 Watch Out For Watch Out For... Tuesday, 07 April 2009 8:30pm Teachers Repeat Set in the world of a modern secondary comprehensive school, Teachers is a series about a group of young teachers and their lives and loves. Teachers tackles the sensitive issues along with the not-so-serious - and always with wit, style and humour. The story of twenty-something teachers and what they really get up to when there's no school desk to hide behind. They don't behave very differently from their pupils; they gossip, swear, sneak into the toilet for a cigarette, are frequently late and always trying to get out of doing any work. The action centres on Simon (Andrew Lincoln), just turned twenty-seven but fighting maturity. Simon's life is divided between school and the pub where he surrounds himself with best friends and colleagues, Susan (Raquel Cassidy), Kurt (Navin Chowdhry) and Brian (Adrian Bower). At school, Simon enjoys a love/hate relationship with fellow teacher Jenny (Nina Sosanya) and clashes with her over his unconventional teaching methods and familiar relationship with the students. After a public argument Simon lets slip that he really wants to sleep with her. He is also struggling with his feelings over new girlfriend, Maggie. He likes her but doesn't like her job - she's a Police Constable. Simon's dad's sudden revelation that he is marrying Marcella (Anna Holkar), whom Simon fancies, sends Simon running to Susan for comfort and advice. Her advice: grow up and move out.
