Course Description
This course is an introduction to the use and meaning of the medical terminology used in various allied health fields.
Relates to other allied health fields and can apply to secretarial science majors.
Course Objectives
After actively participating in this course the student will be able to:
1. Differentiate between terms which sound similar and have similar spellings to translate them correctly.
2. Construct sentences using medical terms to diagnose medical conditions.
3. Determine word meaning by interpretation of prefixes, suffixes and/or word roots.
4. Interpret medical terms for a broad range of body systems and medical conditions.
5. Create medical terms with desired meanings by choosing correct prefixes, suffixes and/or word roots
6. Write and correctly spell medical terms.
7. Correctly pronounce medical terms.
8. Recognize medical terms in use.
Attendance
Success in college depends on regular class attendance. Poor attendance can result in a low grade in the course.
Students are expected to attend each class session and arrive on time. Attendance will be taken at the beginning
and end of class. Please notify the instructor during the break if you are tardy. Class time missed due to
arriving late or leaving early will accumulate and count as an absence when 2 hours and 15 minutes
class time are missed. Students are allowed two absences and will be dropped from the class upon their third
absence (or partial absence). If over two absences are accumulated prior to the last, a letter grade of F will be given
on the final grade report. It is the responsibility of the student to keep track of attendance and officially drop the
course if the choice is made to no longer attend.
Students are expected to personally notify the instructor is the will late, absent, or need to leave early on any given
class day.
Exams

The student is required to bring a #2 pencil and your student ID number for each exam. A scantron will
be provided.
O
The content of the exam will be taken directly from the text. All exams will be multiple choice.
O
If a student arrives late on the day of a scheduled exam, they will not be given any additional time to
take the exam.
O
If a student misses an exam, the student must notify the instructor prior to the start of class that they
will be absent. If a make up exam is allowed by the instructor, the exam must be completed within 24
hours. No make up exam will be allowed if the student does not personally inform the instructor in
advance of the absence. Documented, extenuating circumstances will be given consideration.
O
Extra Credit questions may periodically be given and may consist of matching/fill in the blank. For fill in
the blank questions, the term must be spelled correctly to receive credit.
In Class Assignments
In class assignments will be given periodically throughout the course. These assignments will include video word
definitions, crossword puzzles and other activities. There are no make-ups on in class assignments. If you miss class
on the day of an in class assignment you will receive a zero. The lowest in class assignment score will be dropped.
Final Examination
The final exam will include multiple choice, matching, and definitions of medical terms and abbreviations. All
questions will be asked in a multiple choice format. The final exam is cumulative; it will cover all chapters included in
this course. Please bring a #2 pencil. No make-up examinations will be given unless arrangements are made prior to
the exam and documented, extenuating circumstances are present.
How to Succeed in This Course
This course will require a minimum of 3-4 hours of study time each week in order to develop a professional medical
vocabulary. Complete the chapter exercises in your text book after each class period to reinforce new terminology.
It is also recommended that you complete the Pronunciation of Terms and Review Sheet sections at the end of each
chapter. Practice correct spelling. Make flash cards for each new suffix, prefix, and combining form and use them to
build your vocabulary and study for the weekly quiz. The text includes a CD-ROM containing the pronunciation of
terms, activities, and information that will reinforce medical terminology learned in each chapter.
Class Policies and Procedures
The reading assignments are to be completed before the date they are listed.
1. The course syllabus is a guide for the student and may be modified by the instructor as necessary during the
semester. The student is responsible for any and all modifications in this schedule that are announced in class.
2. Tape recording is not allowed.
3. Cellular phones and pagers must be turned off or silent during class, no cell phone or text conversations in the
classroom.
Grading Criteria
3 exams @ 40%. In class assignments/class participation/homework @ 20%. Final Exam @ 40%
